IMAM ALI HAS SAID THAT THERE IS NO BETTER
VERSE THAN THIS TO GIVE HEART, JOY AND CONFIDENCE TO A BELIEVER FOR THE
AVAILABILITY OF DIVINE MERCY.
ALLAH (SWT) IS JUST, BUT HE IS NOT MERCILESS. HIS JUSTICE IS ALWAYS TEMPERED WITH HIS
MERCY. HE HAS MADE MERCY INCUMBENT ON HIMSELF
(An-am 6:12
& 54),
õ He
invites man to seek His pardon (Nisa 4:106),
õ He
wipes out sins (Ankabut
29:7, 47:2,
64:9, 65:5 and 66:8),
õ He
bestows His mercy upon whomsoever He pleases (Baqarah 2:105) provided the sinner turns repentant to
Him and thereafter remains on the right path.
*HE IS SUCH A MERCIFUL JUDGE THAT HE DOES NOT WAIT TO PUNISH BUT TO PARDON. *HENCE
before the matter comes to be tried, He invites repentance *AND even encourages the sinners to make haste in
seeking His pardon (57:21) *he never wants any sinner to be dejected and go
hopeless of His mercy. BUT THE PARDON IS GRANTED
ONLY WHEN IT IS ASKED FOR IN TIME.
µ It is said that Wahshi the
assassin of Hamza [The Prophet’s (ALLAHuma sali
ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) uncle] at Ohod, got hopeless of
being forgiven by ALLAH (SWT) and Hence did not embrace Islam BUT when he came to know of the verse, he
joined the ranks of the faithful.
Every surah of the
Qur’an, except al
Bara-at, begins with the first verse of al Fatihah. Refer to the introduction of al Fatihah and the commentary of al Fatihah 1:1 to 4 to
understand the true interpretation of this verse.

(39:53)
Tell them, (O Prophet): “My servants *70 who have
committed excesses against themselves, do not despair of Allah’s Mercy. Surely
Allah forgives all sins. He is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. *71
*70
Some commentators have given a
strange interpretation to these words. They say that Allah Himself has
commanded the Holy Prophet to address the people as "My servants"
therefore, all men are the servants of the Holy Prophet. This interpretation is
no interpretation at all but a worst distortion of the meaning of the Qur'an
and indeed tampering with the Word of Allah. If this interpretation were
correct, it would falsify and negate the whole Qur'an. For the Qur'an, from the
beginning to the end, establishes the concept that men are the servants of
Allah alone, and its whole message revolves around the point that they should
serve none but One Allah alone. The Holy Prophet (upon whom be Allah's peace)
himself was Allah's servant. Allah had sent him not as rabb (sustainer,
providence) but as a Messenger so that he should himself serve Him and teach
the other people also to serve Him alone. After all, how can a sensible person
believe that the Holy Prophet might have one day stood up before the
disbelieving Quraish of Makkah and made the sudden proclamation: "You are
in fact the slaves of Muhammad and not of al- `Uzzah and ash-Shams." (We
seek Allah's refuge from this)
*71 The address here is to all mankind. There is no weighty argument to regard only the believers as the addressees. As has been observed by 'Allama Ibn Kathir, to address such a thing to the common men does not mean that Allah forgives all sins without repentance, but Allah Himself has explained in the following verses that sins are forgiven only when the sinner turns to Allah's worship and service and adopts obedience to the message sent down by Him. As a matter of fact, this verse brought a message of hope for those people who had committed mortal sins like murder, adultery, theft, robbery, etc. in the days of ignorance, and had despaired whether they would ever be forgiven. To them it has been said: "Do not despair of Allah's mercy: whatever you might have done in the past, if you sincerely turn to your Lord's obedience, you will be forgiven every sin." The same interpretation of this verse has been given by Ibn `Abbas, Qatadah, Mujahid and Ibn Zaid. (Ibn Jarir, Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Da'ud, Tirmidhi). For further explanation, see AI-Furqan: 70-71 and the E.N.'s thereof.

وَأَنِيبُوا إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ وَأَسْلِمُوا لَهُ مِنْ

[Q39:54] Dan kembalilah kamu kepada Tuhan kamu dengan bertaubat, serta berserah

THE SINNERS MUST TURN TO ALLAH (SWT) IN REPENTANCE
BEFORE THEY MEET THEIR LORD FOR THE FINAL RECKONING BECAUSE once the decree is passed the
punishment will begin from which there will be no escape. PARDON WILL BE
AVAILABLE TO THOSE WHO REPENT AND SURRENDER THEMSELVES TO THE MERCY OF ALLAH
(SWT).
This verse invites the sinners to turn to the Lord before their case comes up to
Him for His final decision. Pardon could reasonably be had before being caught
by the execution.
Mercy would naturally be due to one who surrenders
himself and repents for any offence before he is caught by justice AND NOT for the one who continues committing the offence and when
caught, wants to be pardoned.

THE BEST AMONG THE CREATED BEINGS SENT
DOWN TO THE PEOPLE IS THE HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHUMA
SALI ALA MUHAMMAD WA ALA ALI MUHAMMAD) WITH THE
BOOK OF ALLAH (SWT).
The HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma ali sali ala Muhammad wa ala
Muhammad),
on several occasions, made known to the people that Ali and he were from one and
the same light, so they should follow and obey him
(see hadith al thaqalayn and other traditions,
the commentary of al Ma-idah 5:67, Ali Imran 4:61, Ahzab 33:33, Baqarah 2:124,
and recall to memory the commentary of several verses so far read), and after Ali, the holy Imams of the Ahlul
Bayt. They
are the best among the whole mankind in all ages. To follow the best
chosen by ALLAH (SWT), we must identify and discard those who are ordinary and
weak in faith.
WE SHOULD AIM TO COPY ONLY THE BEST FROM ALLAH (SWT) AND TO DO THIS, WE SHOULD FIRST DISCARD THE OTHERS, AND
WE SHOULD DO THIS AT ONCE WITHOUT POSTPONING EVEN TO THE NEXT MOMENT FOR THE
SUMMON TO THE JUDGMENT MAY COME AT ANY MOMENT. It would come suddenly, even before we get conscious of
our beings at a place and once called to account there could never be any
respite at all.

*72 "To
follow the best aspect of the Book of Allah" means that one should carry
out the Commands Allah has given and refrain from what He has forbidden, and
learn lessons from what He has brought out in the parables and narratives. As
against this, the one who turns away from Allah's Commands, indulges in the
forbidden things, and dces not heed His admonitions, follows the worst aspect
of the Book of AIlah, i.e. that
aspect which the Divine Book has declared as the most evil.

THE GOSPEL OF UNITY, renewed in Islam with utmost emphasis and full force, has been the message from ALLAH
(SWT) since the arrival of Adam in this world. There is a general statement in this verse, addressed to people through the HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad).
IT IMPLIES THAT IF THE
MOTIVATING DRIVE BEHIND ANY WORK DONE IS NOT THE SERVICE OF ALLAH (SWT),
IT BEARS NO FRUIT IN THE LIFE OF HEREAFTER, BECAUSE WHEN ANY OTHER THAN ALLAH (SWT) IS
ASSOCIATED THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THE DEED IS LOST.

(39:65) (Tell them clearly that) it was
revealed to you and to all Prophets before you: “If you associate any others
with Allah in His Divinity, your works will surely come to naught *74 and
you will certainly be among the losers.”
*74 That is,
"No act which is performed along with shirk will be adjudged as a
righteous act, and no one who, being a mushrik, performs many acts as good acts
in his personal judgement, will deserve any reward for them, and his whole life

THE AUTHORITY OF ALLAH (SWT) IS NOT LIKE UNTO ANY DEVICE MADE BY MAN.
IF MAN FAILS TO SEE BEYOND HIS OWN DEVICES, he will never understand the
omnipotent power of ALLAH (SWT). The whole earth will be no more to Him than a
thing that will be crushed in the hallow of His hand, nor will the heavens with
their vast expanse be more than a rolled up scroll in His right hand, the hand
of power and will. This
is, of course, figurative. ALLAH (SWT) is not a creature of flesh and blood,
with hands and fingers
THOSE WHO ASSOCIATE OTHERS WITH ALLAH (SWT) IN
AUTHORITY HAVE
NO IDEA OF THE ABSOLUTENESS OF HIS POWER OR AUTHORITY.
Verse 6:92 of An-am and 22:74 of Hajj also
have the same meanings.
© NO ONE HAS ANY INTRINSIC POWER. ALLAH (SWT) IS
THE SUPREME AUTHORITY. HIS
AUTHORITY WILL MANIFEST ITSELF ON THE DAY OF RESURRECTION TO ALL CREATURES.
All those who thought
they had power or authority will appear before Him in abject submission. The
state of the Day of Resurrection will be free from the laws of space and time
and dimensional barriers (Anbiya 21:104).

(39:67) They did not recognise the true worth of
Allah. *75 (Such is Allah’s power that) on the Day of
Resurrection the whole earth will be in His grasp, and the heavens shall be
folded up in His Right Hand. *76 Glory be to Him! Exalted be He
from all that they associate with Him. *77

"They have no conception of the greatness and glory of Allah; they have
never tried to understand how high is the position of the Lord of the Universe
and how insignificant arc the beings whom these foolish people have made
associates in Godhead and worthy of their worship."
*76 This is a figurative way of describing the complete control and authority of AIlah over the earth and heavens. Just as a man encloses a small ball in the hollow of his hand with perfect ease, or a person rolls up an handkerchief in his hand without any difficulty, so will All men (who fail to conceive the greatness and glory of Allah) sec with their own eyes, on the Day of Resurrection, that the earth and the heavens arc like an ordinary ball and a small scroll in the hand of Allah. Traditions have been related in Musnad Ahmad, Bukhari, Muslim, Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, Ibn Jarir and others, on the authority of Hadrat 'Abdullah bin 'Umar and Hadrat Abu Hurairah, that once during a sermon the Holy Prophet recited this verse and then said: "Allah will hold the heavens and the earths (i.e. the planets) in His grasp and will roll them about in such a way as a child rolls a ball, and will say: 'I am God, the One: I am the King: I am the All-Mighty, Owner of glory: Where arc the kings of the world? Where are the tyrants? Where are the arrogant?" -Saying these words he started so shaking that we feared that he might topple over alongwith the pulpit."
*77 That is, there is no comparison whatever between Allah's greatness and glory and the insignificance of those who are associated with Him in Godhead.

exception, according to Ahlul Bayt, refers to martyrs.

v THE
CREATION BEGIN WITH ‘ALHAMDULILLAH’ PRAISING
ALLAH (SWT) AND ENDS WITH THE SAME.
v Thus
the Holy Imams recommend that man should begin with thanks-giving to ALLAH
(SWT) and end it with it. Refers verses 28:70 and 39:74.
Attributing
this grace and the blessings of ALLAH (SWT) to the early Muslim conquest of a
strip of some fertile lands, is nothing
BUT the
profanation of the high ideals of Islam, into a mean and limited temporal gain.
