SURAH (39) AZ-ZUMAR (AYA 31 to 50)

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِنْدَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ {39:31}
[Q39:31] Summa innakum Yawmal Qiyaamati 'inda Rabbikum takhtasimoon.
[Q39:31] Then surely on the day of resurrection you will contend one with another before your Lord.

IN THE LIFE OF HEREAFTER, the consequence of the life of this world, ALL THE THINGS ABOUT WHICH PEOPLE DISPUTE IN THIS WORLD WILL BE MADE CLEAR IN THE PRESENCE OF ALLAH (SWT); then the disputants will realise their folly.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:31) Then eventually all of you will contend before your Lord on the Day of Resurrection.

فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ كَذَبَ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَكَذَّبَ بِالصِّدْقِ إِذْ جَاءَهُ ۚ أَلَيْسَ فِي جَهَنَّمَ مَثْوًى لِلْكَافِرِينَ {39:32}
[Q39:32] Faman azlamu mimman kazaba 'alaL Laahi wa kazzaba bissidqi iz jaaa'ah; alaisa fee Jahannama maswal lilkaafir.
[Q39:32] Who is then more unjust than he who utters a lie against ALLAH (SWT) and (he who) gives the lie to the truth when it comes to him; is there not in hell an abode for the unbelievers?

Refer to Anam 6:21, 94, 145 and 158.
NO OFFENCE IS MORE HEINOUS THAN BELYING THE SIGNS OF ALLAH (SWT), in spite of the truth being made clear by continuous guidance.
In Matthew 12:31 and 32, Isa says:
Ø  Wherefore I say ontu you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men; but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.”
Ø  "And whosoever speaks a word against the son of man, it shall be forgiven him; but whosoever speaks against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this age nor in the age to come."
Nisa 4:48 and 116 confirm that which has been said by prophet Isa.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:32) Who, then, can be more unjust than he who lied against Allah and denied the Truth when it came to him, calling it a lie? Is there no room for such unbelievers in Hell?

وَالَّذِي جَاءَ بِالصِّدْقِ وَصَدَّقَ بِهِ ۙ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُتَّقُونَ {39:33}
[Q39:33] Wallazee jaaa'a bissidqi wa saddaqa biheee ulaaa'ika humul muttaqoon.
[Q39:33] And he who brings the truth and (he who) accepts it as the truth-- these are they that guard (against evil).

"He who brings the truth" refers to the HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad), and it is unanimously accepted by the scholars of all sects that 'He who testifies it' refers to Ali ibne Abi Talib. See commentary of Ali Imran 3:52 and 53.
o    Ibn al Maghazli writes the above noted interpretation in his Manaqibah on the authority of Mujahid.
o    Hafizan ibn Marduwayh and Hafiz Abu Nu-aym have also recorded this tradition.
Once the HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) asked his companions:
"Who among you would relate to me a distinguishing excellence of my cousin, Ali?" "I shall," said Ammar Yasir.
"Do, then," said the HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad). Ammar recited this verse. "True is that which you have recited," said the HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad).
v  Imam Ali said:
"I am the siddiq al akbar (the greatest truthful) and I am the faruq al azam (the greatest distinguisher), and none shall claim these titles other than me, save a liar."
v  Ibn Abbas said:
"When on the night of ascension the HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) visited the kingdom of ALLAH (SWT) in the heavens, He told him: 'Go and inform your followers what you have seen here'. The HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) asked: 'Who would testify my statement?' ALLAH (SWT) replied: 'Ali will testify.'"
"These are those who safeguard themselves against evil" and VERSES 34 AND 35 refer to the other believers in the truth who also are entitled to be called muttaqin according to the degree of their sincerity in the faith.
THIS VERSE IS APPLICABLE TO ALL THE PROPHETS AND THEIR TESTIFIERS. Among them the most distinguished are:
(i) Ezkhiel - Mumin ali Firawn,
(ii) Habib-e-Najjar - Mumin ali Yasin,
(iii) Ali ibne Abi Talib, - the superior most among them.
Any view expressed by any commentator, NOT SUPPORTED BY THE SAYINGS OF THE HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHUMA SALI ALA MUHAMMAD WA ALA ALI MUHAMMAD), SHOULD BE REJECTED OUTRIGHT.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:33) But he who brought the Truth, and those who confirmed it as true, such are the ones who shall be guarded against the chastisement. *52
*52 It means this: "As to who will receive punishment in the trial before Allah on the day of Resurrection, you should note it well that the punishment inevitably will be inflicted on those wicked people who invented a false creed that there were other associates also with AIlah, who had a share in His Being, authority, powers and rights, and worse than that, when the truth was presented before them, they not only paid no heed to it, but, on the contrary, treated the one who presented it as an impostor. As far as the person who came with the truth, and those who affirmed faith in him, are concerned there can obviously be no question of their receiving any punishment from the Court of Allah. "

لَهُمْ مَا يَشَاءُونَ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ جَزَاءُ الْمُحْسِنِينَ {39:34}
[Q39:34] Lahum maa yashaaa'oona 'inda Rabbihim; zaalika jazaaa'ul Muhsineena.
[Q39:34] They shall have with their Lord what they please; that is the reward of the doers of good;
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:34) They shall have from their Lord all that they wish for. *53 That is the reward of those that do good,
*53 One should note that the words used here are inch Rabbi-him (with their Lord) and not fil-jannah (in Paradise), and obviously man reaches in the presence of his Lord just after death. Therefore, the intention of the verse seems to be: Not only after entering Paradise but right from the time of death till his entry into Paradise also AIlah will treat the righteous believer in the same kind manner. The believer will certainly desire to be saved from the torment of barzakh from the severities of the Day of Resurrection and Judgment, from the humiliation of the Plain of Gathering and from the punishment of his errors and shortcomings, and Allah Almighty will fulfil all his desires.

لِيُكَفِّرَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ أَسْوَأَ الَّذِي عَمِلُوا وَيَجْزِيَهُمْ أَجْرَهُمْ بِأَحْسَنِ الَّذِي كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ {39:35}
[Q39:35] LiyukaffiraL Laahu 'anhum aswa allazee 'amiloo wa yajziyahum ajrahum bi ahsanil lazee kaano ya’maloon.
[Q39:35] So that ALLAH (SWT) will do away with the worst of what they did and give them their reward for the best of what they do.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:35) so that Allah may remit their worst deeds and reward them according to the best of their deeds. *54
*54 The people who believed in the Holy Prophet had happened to commit most heinous sins, both ideological and moral, in the days of ignorance, and after affirmation of the faith the good that they did was not only that they gave up the falsehood they had been professing and accepted the Truth that the Holy Prophet had presented, but in addition, they had performed the best righteous acts in morality devotion and in their dealing's with others, Allah says: The worst deeds that they had committed in the days of ignorance will be wiped off from their account, and they will be rewarded for the best of their deeds found in their conduct book.

أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِكَافٍ عَبْدَهُ ۖ وَيُخَوِّفُونَكَ بِالَّذِينَ مِنْ دُونِهِ ۚ وَمَنْ يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ هَادٍ {39:36}
[Q39:36] AlaisaL Laahu bikaafin 'abdahoo wa yukhawwi foonaka billazeena min doonih; wa mai yudliliL Laahu famaa lahoo min haad.
[Q39:36] Is not ALLAH (SWT) sufficient for His servant? And they seek to frighten you with those besides Him; and whomsoever ALLAH (SWT) makes err, there is no guide for him.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:36) (O Prophet), does Allah not suffice for His servant? They frighten you with others apart from Him, *55 although he whom Allah lets go astray, none can guide him to the Right Way.
*55 The disbelievers of Makkah used to say to the Holy Prophet, "You behave insolently in respect of our deities and utter rude words against them: you do not know how powerful they are and what miraculous powers they possess. Anybody who dishonoured them was ruined. If you also do not desist from what you say against them, you too will be annihilated. "

وَمَنْ يَهْدِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ مُضِلٍّ ۗ أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِعَزِيزٍ ذِي انْتِقَامٍ {39:37}
[Q39:37] Wa mai yahdiL Laahu famalahoo mim mudlil; alai saL Laahu bi'azeezin zin tiqaam
[Q39:37] And whom ALLAH (SWT) guides, there is none that can lead him astray; is not ALLAH (SWT) Mighty, the Lord of retribution?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:37) And he whom Allah guides to the Right Way, none can lead him astray. Is not Allah the Most Mighty, the Lord of Retribution? *56
*56 That is, "This also is a result of their lack of guidance that the foolish people esteem highly the power and honour of their deities but they never think that Allah also is Almighty and they can also be punished for insulting Him by the shirk they are committing against Him. "

وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ مَنْ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ اللَّهُ ۚ قُلْ أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا تَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ إِنْ أَرَادَنِيَ اللَّهُ بِضُرٍّ هَلْ هُنَّ كَاشِفَاتُ ضُرِّهِ أَوْ أَرَادَنِي بِرَحْمَةٍ هَلْ هُنَّ مُمْسِكَاتُ رَحْمَتِهِ ۚ قُلْ حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ ۖ عَلَيْهِ يَتَوَكَّلُ الْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ {39:38}
[Q39:38] Wa la'in sa altahum man khalaqas samaawaati wal arda la yaqoolunaL Laah; qul afara'aitum maa tad'oona min dooniL Laahi in araadaniyaL Laahu bidurrin hal hunna kaashi faatu durriheee aw araadanee birahmatin hal hunna mumsikaatu rahmatih; qul hasbiyaL Laahu 'alaihi tatawakkalul Mutawakkiloun.
[Q39:38] And should you ask them, Who created the heavens and the earth? They would most certainly say: ALLAH (SWT). Say: Have you then considered that what you call upon besides ALLAH (SWT), would they, if ALLAH (SWT) desire to afflict me with harm, be the removers of His harm, or (would they), if ALLAH (SWT) desire to show me mercy, be the withholders of His mercy? Say: ALLAH (SWT) is sufficient for me; on Him do the reliant rely.

See commentary of Muminun 23:84 to 89 and Ankabut 29:61 according to which even the disbelievers, if asked, would admit that ALLAH (SWT) is the creator of the heavens and the earth.
Ü  THE BELIEVERS PUT THEIR TRUST IN ALLAH (SWT) - see Yusuf 12:67 and Ibrahim 14:11.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:38) If you ask them: “Who created the heavens and the earth?” they will surely answer: “Allah.” Tell them: “What do you think, then, of the deities whom you call upon instead of Allah? If Allah should will that an affliction befall me, will those deities remove the harm inflicted by Him? Or if Allah should will that I receive (His) Mercy, will they be able to withhold His Mercy from me?” Say: “Allah is sufficient for me; those who have to put their trust, let them put their trust in Him*57
*57 Ibn Abi Hatim has related from Ibn `Abbas that the Holy Prophet said: 'The person who desires that he should become most powerful among men should repose his trust in Allah; and the person who desires that he should become the wealthiest among men should have more trust in that which is with Allah than that which is in his own hand; and the person who desires that he should become most honourable among men should fear Allah Almighty."

قُلْ يَا قَوْمِ اعْمَلُوا عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمْ إِنِّي عَامِلٌ ۖ فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ {39:39}
[Q39:39] Qul yaa qawmi'maloo 'alaa makaanatikum innee 'aamilun fasawfa ta’lamoon.
[Q39:39] Say: O my people! Work in your place, surely I am a worker, so you will come to know.

See Hud 11:93 and 121.

See An-am 6:108.

(39:41) (O Prophet), We revealed to you the Book with the Truth for all mankind. So he who follows the Right Way does so to his own benefit, and he who goes astray, shall hurt only himself by straying. You are not accountable on their behalf*59
*59 That is, °It is not for you to bring them to the Right Path. Your only duty is to present the Right Path before them. If they prefer to remain astray after that, you are not responsible for it."

SECTION 5
Consequences of the evil wrought, shall not be averted
The chastisement in consequence of the evil wrought in this life by the wicked, shall not be averted even if everthing in the Universe and even with some addition to it is offered to ransom the wicked ones from being punished---All intercession belong to ALLAH (SWT).

اللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى الْأَنْفُسَ حِينَ مَوْتِهَا وَالَّتِي لَمْ تَمُتْ فِي مَنَامِهَا ۖ فَيُمْسِكُ الَّتِي قَضَىٰ عَلَيْهَا الْمَوْتَ وَيُرْسِلُ الْأُخْرَىٰ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ {39:42}
[Q39:42] ALLaahu yatawaffal anfusa heena mawtihaa wallatee lam tamut fee manaamihaa fa yumsikul latee qadaa 'alaihal mawta wa yursilul ukhraaa ilaaa ajalim musammaa; inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil liqawmai yatafakkaroun.
[Q
39:42] ALLAH (SWT) takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep; then He withholds those on whom He has passed the decree of death and sends the others back till an appointed term; most surely there are signs in this for a people who reflect.

See commentary of An-am 6:60 and Sajdah 32:11.
TO A CERTAIN EXTENT THERE IS AFFINITY BETWEEN SLEEP AND DEATH. In the state of sleep, the cognitive self disassociates itself from the conscious world of senses BUT not from the body altogether, as the working of sub-conscious, unconscious or super-conscious does not cease. The dreams are said to be the expression of any of them.
THE DREAMS OF THE PROPHETS WERE THE MANIFESTATION OF THE SUPER-CONSCIOUS WHICH REVEALED THE UNSEEN TO THEM.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:42) It is Allah Who takes away the souls of people at the hour of their death, and takes away at the time of sleep the souls of those that have not died. *60 Then He retains the souls of those against whom He had decreed death and returns the souls of others till an appointed time. Surely there are Signs in this for a people who reflect. *61
*60 "Taking the souls during sleep" implies the suspension of the powers of feeling and consciousness, understanding and will.
*61 By this Allah wants every man to realize how life and death are entirely in His own hand. No one has the guarantee that he will certainly get up alive in the morning when he goes to sleep at night. No one knows what disaster could befall him within a moment, and whether the next moment would be a moment of life for him or of death. At any time, while asleep or awake, in the house or outside it, some unforeseen calamity, from inside his body or from outside, can, suddenly cause his death: Thus, man who is so helpless in the hand of God, .would be foolish if he turned away from the same God or became heedless of Him.

أَمِ اتَّخَذُوا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ شُفَعَاءَ ۚ قُلْ أَوَلَوْ كَانُوا لَا يَمْلِكُونَ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ {39:43}
[Q39:43] Amit takhazoo min dooniLLaahi shufa'aaa'; qul awalaw kaanoo laa yamlikoona shai'aw wa laa ya’qiloon
[Q39:43] Or have they taken intercessors besides ALLAH (SWT)? Say: what! Even though they did not ever have control over anything, nor do they understand.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:43) Or have they taken others instead of Allah as intercessors? *62 Say: “Will they intercede though they may have no power and though they may not even understand?”
*62 That is, "In the first place, these people have foolishly presumed that there are some beings who wield great influence with Allah, and whose itercession is never turned down, whereas there is no proof of their being intercessors at all, nor has Allah ever said that they hold such a position with Him, nor did these beings themselves ever claim that they would use their influence with Allah and help them out in every case. Another folly of these people is that they have ignored the real Master and have believed the imaginary beings to be all powerful, who deserve to receive all their devotion and dedication."

قُلْ لِلَّهِ الشَّفَاعَةُ جَمِيعًا ۖ لَهُ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۖ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ {39:44}
[Q39:44] Qul liLLaahish shafaa'atu jamee'aa; lahoo mulkus samaawaati wal ardi summa ilaihi turja’oon.
[Q39:44] Say: ALLAH (SWT)'s is the intercession altogether; His is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, then to Him you shall be brought back.

For the doctrine of intercession (shafa-at) refer to the commentary of Baqarah 2:48 and 123 and other references mentioned therein.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:44) Say: “All intercession lies with Allah. *63 His is the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And to Him will all of you be sent back.”
*63 That is, "Not to speak of getting his intercession granted, no one has the power to stand before Allah as an intercessor. The right to grant or not to grant anyone the permission to intercede with Him exclusively rests with Allah. Then He may allow intercession for whomever He may please and forbid for whomever He may please." (For understanding the difference between the Islamic concept of intercession and the polytheistic concept, see Al-Baqarah: 255, Al-An`am: 51, Yunus: 3, 18, Hud: 105, Ar-Ra`d: 11, An-Naml: 73, 84, Ta Ha: 109-110, Al-Anbiya': 23, Al-Hijr: 76, and the E.N.'s thereof and E.N. 40 of Saba.

وَإِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ اشْمَأَزَّتْ قُلُوبُ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ ۖ وَإِذَا ذُكِرَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ دُونِهِ إِذَا هُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ {39:45}
[Q39:45] Wa izaa zukiraL Laahu wahdahush ma azzat quloobul lazeena laa yu'minoona bil Aakhirati wa izaa zukiral lazeena min dooniheee izaa hum yastabshiroon.
[Q39:45] And when ALLAH (SWT) alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the hereafter shrink, and when those besides Him are mentioned, lo! They are joyful.

To those who are not true monotheists the mention of ALLAH (SWT), or His commandments, is hateful.
**As soon as the HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) departed from this world, the hypocrites at once turned hostile to his Ahlul Bayt in spite of the several verses of the Qur’an which establish their superior merits and their authority and the declarations of the HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) (from dawat dhil ashira to Ghadir Khum), and became the self-imposed leaders of the people.**
THIS VERSE CLEARLY SAYS THAT A MERE VERBAL DECLARATION OF THE FAITH DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT EVERY SUCH DECLARER IS ALSO A CLEAR BELIEVER.
ä  Such was the case with many of those who had merely professed Islam BUT were not believers – in fact ….. refers verses 49:14 and 63:1
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:45) When Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter contract with bitterness, but when deities apart from Allah are mentioned, they are filled with joy. *64
*64 This evil is common to almost all polytheistic people of the world, and even some unfortunate Muslims also suffer from it, They profess with the tongue that they believe in Allah, but when One Allah alone is mentioned before them, their faces arc distorted, and they say, "This man certainly does not believe in the saints and holy men; that is why he talks of Allah and Allah alone." And if others besides Allah arementioned, they are delighted, and their faces brighten up with joy.  Their this attitude shows as to who is the actual object of their love and esteem. 'Allama Alusi, in his commentary Ruh al-Ma ani, has related his own experience here. He says: "One day I saw that a man was invoking the help of a dead saint in his affliction. I said; O bondsman of Allah, invoke Allah, for He Himself says: 'If My servants ask you, O Prophet, concerning Me, tell them I am quite near to them. I hear and answer the prayer of the supplicant when he calls to Me" (AI-Baqarah: 186), Hearing this the man became angry, the people told me afterwards that he said: This man is a denier of the saints; and some others heard him also say: The saints answer the prayers more promptly than does Allah."

قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ أَنْتَ تَحْكُمُ بَيْنَ عِبَادِكَ فِي مَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ {39:46}
[Q39:46] QuliL Laahumma faatiras samaawaati wal ardi 'Aalimal Ghaibi washshahaadati Anta tahkumu baina 'ibaadika fee maa kaanoo fee yakhtalifoon.
[Q39:46] Say: O ALLAH (SWT)! Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen! Thou (only) judgest between Thy servants as to that wherein they differ.

(39:46) Say: “O Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the Knower of the unseen and the seen, You it is Who will judge among Your servants concerning what they differed.

وَلَوْ أَنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا وَمِثْلَهُ مَعَهُ لَافْتَدَوْا بِهِ مِنْ سُوءِ الْعَذَابِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۚ وَبَدَا لَهُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يَكُونُوا يَحْتَسِبُونَ {39:47}
[Q39:47] Wa law anna lillazeena zalamoo maa fil ardi jamee'anw wa mislahoo ma'ahoo laftadaw bihee min sooo'il azaabi Yawmal Qiyaamah; wa badaa lahum minaL Laahi maa lam yakkoonoo yahtasiboon.
[Q39:47] And had those who are unjust all that is in the earth and the like of it with it, they would certainly offer it as ransom (to be saved) from the evil of the punishment on the day of resurrection; and what they never thought of shall become plain to them from ALLAH (SWT).

Refer to the commentary of Rad 13:17.

(39:47) If the wrong-doers possessed the treasures of the earth in their entirety and as much besides, they would gladly offer it on the Day of Resurrection to redeem themselves from the harrowing chastisement. This because there will appear to them from Allah something (exceedingly dismal which) they had never even imagined.

وَبَدَا لَهُمْ سَيِّئَاتُ مَا كَسَبُوا وَحَاقَ بِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ {39:48}
[Q39:48] Wa badaa lahum saiyiaatu maa kasaboo wa haaqa bihim maa kaanoo bihee yastahzi'oon.
[Q39:48] And the evil (consequences) of what they wrought shall become plain to them, and the very thing they mocked at shall beset them.

(39:48) The evil consequences of their deeds will become fully apparent to them, and what they had scoffed at will encompass them.

فَإِذَا مَسَّ الْإِنْسَانَ ضُرٌّ دَعَانَا ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلْنَاهُ نِعْمَةً مِنَّا قَالَ إِنَّمَا أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ ۚ بَلْ هِيَ فِتْنَةٌ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ{39:49}
[Q39:49] Fa izaa massal insaana durrun da'aanaa summa izaa khawwalnaahu ni'matam minna qaala innamaaa ootee tuhoo 'alaa 'ilm; bal hiya fitna tunw wa laakinna aksarahum laa ya’lamoon.
[Q39:49] So when harm afflicts a man he calls upon Us; then, when We give him a favor from Us, he says: I have been given it only by means of knowledge. Nay, it is a trial, but most of them do not know.

(39:49) When an affliction befalls man, *65 he cries out to Us; but when We grant him a favour from Us, he says: “I have been granted this on account of my knowledge.” *66 Nay; this (favour) is a test; but most of them do not know*67
*65 "The man"  the one who has aversion to Allah and whose face is distorted on hearing Allah alone being mentioned.
*66 This sentence can have two meanings: (1) "That Allah knows that I stand worthy of this blessing; that is why He has given me All this, otherwise He would not have blessed me if I had been an evil and wicked person in His sight;" and (2) `that I have attained to this by virtue of my ability."
*67 People ignorantly think that whoever is being blessed by Allah in some way is being so blessed necessarily on account of his worth and ability and that the same is a sign or proof of his being a favourite in His sight; whereas the fact is that whoever is being given something here, is being given it for the sake of a trial by Allah. This is a means of the test, and not any reward for ability, otherwise many able and worthy people would not be living in poverty and many unworthy people would not be rolling in prosperity. Likewise, these worldly blessings are not a sign of one's being a favourite with AIlah either. Everyone can see that many good people whose goodness is unquestionable are living in hardships in the world, and many wicked people whose evil-doing is well known areenjoying the pleasures of life, Now, can a sensible man take the affliction of the one and the life of ease and comfort of the other as an argument to say that Allah hates the good man and prefers the bad man?

قَدْ قَالَهَا الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ فَمَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ {39:50}
[Q39:50] Qad qaalahul lazeena min qablihim famaaa aghnaa 'anhum maa kaanoo yaksiboon.
[Q39:50] Those before them did say it indeed, but what they earned availed them not.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(39:50) Their predecessors also said the same, but their earnings proved of no avail to them*68

*68 That is, "When they were seized for evil-doing, the ability of which they were so proud, did not avail them anything, and this also became known that they were not Allah's favourites. Evidently, if their earning had been due to their capability and their being favourites with Allah, they would not have been seized for evil-doing at all."
