SURAH AL-BAQARAH (AYAH 91 to 100)

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ آمِنُوا بِمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ قَالُوا نُؤْمِنُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْنَا وَيَكْفُرُونَ بِمَا وَرَاءَهُ وَهُوَ الْحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا مَعَهُمْ ۗ قُلْ فَلِمَ تَقْتُلُونَ أَنْبِيَاءَ اللَّهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ {2:91}
[Q2:91] Wa izaa qeela lahum aaminoo bimaaa anzalal laahu qaaloo nu'minu bimaaa unzila 'alainaa wa yakfuroona bimaa waraaa'ahoo wa huwal haqqu musaddiqal limaa ma'ahum; qul falima taqtuloona Ambiyaaa'al laahi min qablu in kuntum mu'mineen.
[Q2:91] And when it is said to them, Believe in what ALLAH (SWT) has revealed, they say: We believe in that which was revealed to us; and they deny what is besides that, while it is the truth verifying that which they have. Say: Why then did you kill ALLAH (SWT)'s Prophets before if you were indeed believers?
(see commentary for verse 90)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(2:91) When it is said to them, "Believe in that which Allah has sent down," they say, "We believe only in that which has been sent to us", and reject everything else, though it is the Truth and confirms what is with them. Well, ask them, "If you sincerely believed in what was sent down to you, why did you kill the Messengers of Allah (who were sent to you from amongst yourselves)?

وَلَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ مُوسَىٰ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ ثُمَّ اتَّخَذْتُمُ الْعِجْلَ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ وَأَنْتُمْ ظَالِمُونَ {2:92}
[Q2:92] Wa laqad jaaa'akum Moosa bilbaiyinaati summat takhaztunmul 'ijla mim ba'dihee wa antum zaalimoon.
[Q2:92] And most certainly Musa came to you with clear arguments, then you took the calf (for a ALLAH (SWT)) in his absence and you were unjust.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
(2:92) (More than that:) Moses came to you with clear Signs, yet no sooner was he away from you than you transgressed and took the calf for worship.

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَاقَكُمْ وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ الطُّورَ خُذُوا مَا آتَيْنَاكُمْ بِقُوَّةٍ وَاسْمَعُوا ۖ قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا وَأُشْرِبُوا فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الْعِجْلَ بِكُفْرِهِمْ ۚ قُلْ بِئْسَمَا يَأْمُرُكُمْ بِهِ إِيمَانُكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ {2:93}
[Q2:93] Wa iz akhaznaa meesaaqakum wa rafa'naa fawqa kumut Toora khuzoo maaa aatainaakum biquwwatinw wasma'oo qaaloo sami'naa wa 'asainaa wa ushriboo fee quloobihimul 'ijla bikufrihim; qul bi'samaa yaamurukum biheee eemaanukum in kuntum mu'mineen.
[Q2:93] And when We made a covenant with you and raised the mountain over you: Take hold of what We have given you with firmness and be obedient. They said: We hear and disobey. And they were made to imbibe (the love of) the calf into their hearts on account of their unbelief Say: Evil is that which your belief bids you if you are believers.

MUSA ASKED THE JEWS TO HOLD FAST WITH FIRMNESS TO THAT WHICH ALLAH (SWT) HAD GIVEN THEM AFTER MAKING A COVENANT WITH THEM, BUT they said, "We listen, and disobey".
LIKEWISE, the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) demanded allegiance from his followers to ALLAH (SWT)'s command at Ghadir Khum which they agreed to accept BUT BROKE THE PROMISE.
°          The Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) had prophesied that his followers would follow into the footsteps of the followers of Musa.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(2:93) Recall also to mind the Covenant We made with you while We raised the Tur over you: `Follow strictly the precepts We are giving you and give ear to Our Commandments.' Your forefathers replied, "We have heard but we will not obey." They were so prone to unbelief that they cherished the calf in their hearts. Tell them (O Muhammad). "If indeed you are believers, yours is a strange Faith that enjoins you to do such evil things."

قُلْ إِنْ كَانَتْ لَكُمُ الدَّارُ الْآخِرَةُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ خَالِصَةً مِنْ دُونِ النَّاسِ فَتَمَنَّوُا الْمَوْتَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ {2:94}
[Q2:94] Qul in kaanat lakumud Daarul Aakhiratu 'indal laahi khaalisatam min doonin naasi fatamannawul mawta in kuntum saadiqeen.
[Q2:94] Say: If the future abode with ALLAH (SWT) is specially for you to the exclusion of the people, then invoke death if you are truthful.

THE JEWS THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE ALLAH (SWT)'S FAVOURITES TO THE EXCLUSION OF ALL OTHER PEOPLE, and they alone would go to paradise. THIS PREPOSTEROUS IDEA made them deny the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) in spite of the clear proofs available in their book (see commentary of verse 40 of this surah).
°          "Desire death, if you are truthful", is a challengeTamannul Mawta means desire or wish (not invoke or pray) death.
If they were so specially favoured by ALLAH (SWT), they did not have to even take the trouble of praying for death; merely desiring it would have received His response.
·         HE WHO LOVES ALLAH (SWT) LOVES DEATH -TO DEPART FROM THIS WORLD AND ENTER THE ETERNAL LAND OF BLISS AND HAPPINESS. Also refer to verses 62:6 and 7 of al Jumu-ah. Everyone of the holy Ahlul Bayt was always prepared for death and loved it. After receiving the fatal blow Imam Ali said: "By the Lord of the holy Kabah, I have attained success."
THE CONVICTION OF THE JEWS WAS NOT GENUINE. They did not believe in what they said. Aware of their own misdeeds, and the way they had corrupted their books, they could not desire death for themselves. On the other hand they were plotting to kill the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad), because they knew that the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) was a true prophet of ALLAH (SWT).
"Desire death, if you are truthful" is an open challenge. Whoso thinks that the blissful life of the hereafter is exclusively his must always be ready to die. He who is sure of a better life in the hereafter, as the favour of ALLAH (SWT), would not like to prolong his earthly life but would expedite his departure from here.
ä  According to Imam Ali, a genuine devotee, the lover or the favourite of ALLAH (SWT), would not let his soul stay in his body for fraction of a moment if his term of life has not been ordained by ALLAH (SWT), because he knows what awaits him in the life of the hereafter. Therefore he is never afraid of death.
ä  Imam Ali said:
"Verily, by ALLAH (SWT) I declare that the son of Abu Talib is more familiar with death than a baby is with the breast of his mother."
THEREFORE, neither [*]the greed for power nor [*]the fear of death, as the opponents of Ali used to think, was the reason for **his outspoken analysis of the behaviour of his contemporaries, or **his silence in the midst of ruthless deviators and hypocrites.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(2:94) Say to them, "If the abode of the Hereafter with Allah is exclusively reserved for you and not for the rest of mankind, then you should long for death, if you arc sincere in your claim." *98
*98. This is a subtle, satirical reference to their excessive worldliness. Those who really care for the Hereafter neither set their hearts on earthly life, nor are they unduly frightened of death. The condition of the Jews was the reverse of this.

وَلَنْ يَتَمَنَّوْهُ أَبَدًا بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالظَّالِمِينَ {2:95}
[Q2:95] Wa lai yatamannawhu abadam bimaa qaddamat aydeehim; wallaahu 'aleemum bizzaalimeen.
[Q2:95] And they will never invoke it on account of what their hands have sent before, and ALLAH (SWT) knows the unjust.
(see commentary for verse 94)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(2:95) Believe it that they will never wish for it, for (they are fully aware of the consequences of) what they have sent before them for the Hereafter. And Allah knows well the mentality of the transgressors.

وَلَتَجِدَنَّهُمْ أَحْرَصَ النَّاسِ عَلَىٰ حَيَاةٍ وَمِنَ الَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا ۚ يَوَدُّ أَحَدُهُمْ لَوْ يُعَمَّرُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ وَمَا هُوَ بِمُزَحْزِحِهِ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ أَنْ يُعَمَّرَ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بَصِيرٌ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ {2:96}
[Q2:96] Wa latajidannahum ahrasannaasi 'alaa hayaatinw wa minal lazeena ashrakoo; yawaddu ahaduhum law yu'ammaru alfa sanatinw wa maa huwa bi muzahzihihee minal 'azaabi ai yu'ammar; wallaahu baseerum bimaa ya'maloon.
[Q2:96] And you will most certainly find them the greediest of men for life (greedier) than even those who are polytheists; every one of them loves that he should be granted a life of a thousand years, and his being granted a long life will in no way remove him further off from the chastisement, and ALLAH (SWT) sees what they do.
(see commentary for verse 94)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(2:96) You will find that, of all mankind, they are the greediest for life, *99 nay, they are even greedier than the mushriks. Each one of them longs to have a life Of a thousand years, but a long life can, by no means, remove them away from the scourge, for Allah is watching whatever they are doing.
*99. Tle Arabic text implies that the Jews were so frightened of death and so keen to remain alive that they did not mind whether they led an honourable and dignified existence, or whether their life was one of indignity and humiliation.

SECTION 12
Enmity towards Gabriel and the Apostles
Israelites enmity towards Gabriel---Their breaking the covenant---Sorcery falsely attributed to Solomon---The Truth about sorcery.

قُلْ مَنْ كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِجِبْرِيلَ فَإِنَّهُ نَزَّلَهُ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَهُدًى وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ {2:97}
[Q2:97] Qul man kaana 'aduwwal li Jibreela fainnahoo nazzalahoo 'alaa qalbika bi iznil laahi musaddiqal limaa baina yadihi wa hudanw wa bushraa lilmu'mineen.
[Q2:97] Say: Whoever is the enemy of Jibreel-- for surely he revealed it to your heart by ALLAH (SWT)'s command, verifying that which is before it and guidance and good news for the believers?

According to the book of Daniel (12: 1), Mika-il is the great captain who stands guard over the Jews. So Mika-il was their guardian angel.
°          They disliked Jibra-il, who they thought, *always brought punishment. It was Jibra-il through *whom the prophets came to know the perverse behaviour of the Jews, and, therefore, they cursed Jibra-il.
°          It was Jibra-il who *announced the birth of John the Baptist, AND *conveyed the glad tidings to virgin Maryam about the birth of Isa whom the Jews obstinately hated.
°          It was Jibra-il who saved Nebuchadnezzar from their clutches when he was a boy, and he, afterwards, destroyed their temple. Jibra-il was their enemy.
°          This prejudice led them to believe that he was asked to convey the office of prophethood to one of the Jews BUT he inadvertently went to the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad).
°          Abdulla bin Suriya, a Jew, came to the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) and asked some questions to test his genuineness. He was convinced that Muhammad was a true messenger of ALLAH (SWT), BUT when he came to know that it was Jibra-il who conveyed the divine message, he said that he would not believe in his prophethood because Jibra-il was the enemy of the Jews.
IN FACT, the Jews were the enemies of Jibra-il, who brought ALLAH (SWT)'s commands and revelations to His prophets, which contained guidance and good news for the believers.
©  WHOSOEVER IS THE ENEMY OF ALLAH (SWT), HIS MESSENGERS AND HIS ANGELS IS AN UNBELIEVER. ALLAH (SWT) IS THE ENEMY OF THE UNBELIEVERS WHO ARE DESCRIBED AS INFIDELS.
THEREFORE, THOSE WHO **TROUBLED, **TORTURED AND **KILLED THE AHLUL BAYT, THE BELOVED DARLINGS OF THE HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHUMA SALI ALA MUHAMMAD WA ALA ALI MUHAMMAD) AND ALLAH (SWT), ARE THE ENEMIES OF THE HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHUMA SALI ALA MUHAMMAD WA ALA ALI MUHAMMAD) AND ALLAH (SWT).
î   When the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) was leaving this world to meet his creator, the so-called followers of the true religion of ALLAH (SWT) deserted him and held a conference in Saqifa to choose a ruler in complete disregard to their oath of allegiance, which they had promised to uphold, at Ghadir Khum, just a few months before.
î   They had accepted Ali as their MawlaBUT SOON AFTER the departure of the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad), they deprived Ali of his right to succeed the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad), AND, to show their power in this world, arrested him and dragged him to the court of the ruler.
î   The daughter of the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad), Bibi Fatima Zahra, was not only publicly insulted during the trial of Fadak, BUT that which the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) had given her by the command of ALLAH (SWT) was taken away from her, and her house was also set on fire.
       An aggressor kicked the door of her house which fell on her and killed the child she was carrying in her womb, and which finally proved to be the cause of her death.
î   Ali was killed in the mosque.
î   Hasan, the grandson of the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) was killed by poison.
î   Husayn, the other grandson of the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad), and his friends and relatives, were slain in Karbala, and the ladies of the holy family were chained, tortured and held captive for a long time.
±  One after the other, the Holy Imams were killed. Sayyids, the sons and daughters of the family of Ahlul Bayt, were hunted, captured and were either murdered or tortured.
Those who were responsible, directly or indirectly, for such heinous crimes are certainly the enemies of the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad), because no reasonable person can say that these were the acts of friends. Such people are unbelievers, and ALLAH (SWT) is the enemy of the unbelievers.
r  In verse 33:57 of al Ahzab, ALLAH (SWT) has cursed those who annoy or displease ALLAH (SWT) and His messenger in this world and has prepared a painful punishment for them in the hereafter.
r  The Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) said:
"O Ali! Your flesh is my flesh, your blood is my blood. He who fights you, in fact has declared war against me, and to fight against me is to fight ALLAH (SWT)."
Angels and angelic functions have been explained in the commentary of the earlier verses of this surah. Now the functions of the four arch-angels are given below:
(1) JIBRA-IL He communicated the will of ALLAH (SWT) to His messengers. He also destroyed the enemies of ALLAH (SWT) and His messengers.
(2) MIKA-IL He supplies nourishment and provisions.
(3) ISRAFIL He gives forms and shapes. He also assimilates nature.
(4) IZRA-IL He disengages living beings from one state of existence to initiate into another state of existence.
THESE ARE, IN FACT THE FUNCTIONS OF THE RUBUBIYATTHE CHERISHING ASPECT OF ALLAH (SWT)'S GRACE. There are many angels working under the arch-angels. The various angelic functions are closely linked together. One cannot function without the other. The single exclusive authority of ALLAH (SWT) controls these functions according to His supreme will. So, there is no room for the angels to act in contravention to the command of ALLAH (SWT). Only ignorant fools indulge in the theory of possible disobedience by the angels.
r  In verse 66:6 of al Tahrim, the almighty ALLAH (SWT) says that the angels do not disobey Him in that which He commands them; they do that which they are commanded to do.
When various agencies represent one and the same authority, hostility directed towards any will include all and finally lead to the original source, as has been correctly pointed out in verses 4:152 to 154 of al Nisa.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(2:97) Say to them, "Whoever is enemy to Gabriel, *100 should understand that he has, by Allah's command, revealed to your heart the Qur'an *101 which confirms what was revealed before it, *102 and brings Guidance and glad tidings *103 to the Believers.
*100. The Jews not only reviled the Prophet (peace be on him) and his followers but also God's chosen angel, Gabriel, denouncing him as their enemy, and branding him as the angel of curse rather than of blessing.
*101. Since Gabriel communicated the revealed messages with God's approval the abuses of the Jews which were apparently aimed at Gabriei should be considered as directed at God.
*102. They abused Gabriel because he had brought the Qur'an from God, and since the Qur'an on the whole confirms the Torah this too became a co-sharer in those abuses.
*103. Here there is a subtle suggestion that the wrath of the Jews was, in fact, directed against true guidance and righteousness even though acceptance of these would have brought them good tidings as to their own success.

مَنْ كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِلَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَجِبْرِيلَ وَمِيكَالَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَدُوٌّ لِلْكَافِرِينَ {2:98}
[Q2:98] Man kaana 'aduwwal lillaahi wa malaaa'ikatihee wa Rusulihee wa Jibreela wa Meekaala fa innal laaha 'aduwwul lilkaafireen
[Q2:98] Whoever is the enemy of ALLAH (SWT) and His angels and His messengers and Jibreel and Meekaeel, so surely ALLAH (SWT) is the enemy of the unbelievers.
(see commentary for verse 97)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(2:98) (If their enmity to Gabriel is due to this, let them understand that) whoever is enemy to Allah, His Angels, His Messengers, Gabriel and Michael, Allah is enemy to such disbelievers."

وَلَقَدْ أَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ آيَاتٍ بَيِّنَاتٍ ۖ وَمَا يَكْفُرُ بِهَا إِلَّا الْفَاسِقُونَ {2:99}
[Q2:99] Wa laqad anzalnaaa ilaika Aayaatim baiyinaatinw wa maa yakfuru bihaaa illal faasiqoon.
[Q2:99] And certainly We have revealed to you clear communications and none disbelieve in them except the transgressors.

THE VERSES OF THE QUR’AN ARE CLEAR SIGNS. "Signs" also refer to the miracles which the messengers of ALLAH (SWT) put into operation (under ALLAH (SWT)'s command) when the unbelievers denied their divinely commissioned role.
v  ALLAH (SWT)'S AUTHORITY IS ABSOLUTE. WHAT HIS WILL BRINGS ABOUT NONE CAN EVER UNDO. Covered with ignorance, the perverse unbelievers disbelieve in the "signs" of ALLAH (SWT).
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(2:99) We have sent down to you Revelations that clearly expound the Truth, and none but the disobedient reject them.

أَوَكُلَّمَا عَاهَدُوا عَهْدًا نَبَذَهُ فَرِيقٌ مِنْهُمْ ۚ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ {2:100}
[Q2:100] Awa kullamaa 'aahadoo ahdan nabazahoo fareequm minhum; bal aksaruhum laa mu'minoon
[Q2:100] What! Whenever they make a covenant, a party of them cast it aside? Nay, most of them do not believe.

THOSE WHO BREAK THE COVENANT MADE WITH ALLAH (SWT) THROUGH ANY OF HIS MESSENGERS ARE INDEED THE ACCURSED UNBELIEVERS. Such a covenant was made with ALLAH (SWT) by the Muslims through the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) at Ghadir Khum.
After him, they threw the sacred covenant to the winds and usurped the right to guide the people in lure of worldly gains which they obtained by corrupting and converting the religion of ALLAH (SWT) into a heathen system of government, like of which there were many in this world before Islam.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

(2:100) Has it not always been so that every time they made a covenant, some of them set it aside? Nay, most of them never believe in it sincerely.
