SURAH (15) AL-HIJR (AYA 71 to 99)

قَالَ هَٰؤُلَاءِ بَنَاتِي إِنْ كُنْتُمْ فَاعِلِينَ {15:71}
[Q15:71] Qaala haaa'ulaaa'i banaateee in kuntum faa'ileen.
[Q15:71] He said: These are my daughters, if you will do (aught).
[Q15:71] Nabi Lut berkata: Di sini ada anak-anak perempuanku, kalaulah kamu mahu melakukan (secara halal).
(see commentary for verse 51)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:71) At last Lot pleaded, "Here are my daughters, *40 if you are bent on it."
*40 In E.N. 87 of Surah Hud, it has been explained what Prophet Lot meant by this. It may also be added that such words as these were uttered by an honourable man like him in the last resort, when all his entreaties and earnest requests had failed to prevent those people from their evil designs towards his guests.
Here it will be worthwhile to clear the significance of the words which were uttered by Prophet Lot as they occur in Surah Hud (v. 78). When he entreated those wicked people not to molest his guests, saying, "Here are my daughters....", he was unaware that his guests were angels in the disguise of handsome boys. The angels revealed their identity only when the wicked crowd gathered at the residence of his guests and began to threaten them with their wicked designs, and Prophet Lot began to lament, "I wish I had the power to set you right or I could find some strong support for refuge." It was then that the angels revealed themselves, saying, "We are envoys sent by your Lord.... ".  This sequence of events shows that Prophet Lot had made that "offer" only when he had felt to be utterly helpless.
It is very important to keep this in view because the sequences of events in this Surah is different from that in Surah Hud. One is liable to have a misunderstanding as to why Prophet Lot wailed and lamented when he knew all the while that his guests were angels and could defend themselves against those wicked people.
As regards the apparent difference between the two sequences, it may be pointed out that here the important thing to be stated is that the angels come with the truth. Therefore that part of the story (vv. 61-66) has been related first in order to make the point more prominent.

لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِي سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ {15:72}
[Q15:72] La'amruka innahum lafee sakratihim ya'mahoon.
[Q15:72] By your life! They were blindly wandering on in their intoxication.
[Q15:72] Demi umurmu (wahai Muhammad), sesungguhnya mereka membuta tuli dalam kemabukan maksiat mereka.
(see commentary for verse 51)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:72) By your life, O Prophet, they were at that time so intoxicated with lust as to be quite beside themselves with passion.

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ {15:73}
[Q15:73] Fa akhazat humus saihatu mushriqeen.
[Q15:73] So the rumbling overtook them (while) entering upon the time of sunrise;
(see commentary for verse 51)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:73) At last a severe blast overtook them at dawn.

فَجَعَلْنَا عَالِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ {15:74}
[Q15:74] Faja'alnaa 'aaliyahaa saafilahaa wa amtamaa 'alaihim hijaaratam min sjijjeel.
[Q15:74] Thus did We turn it upside down, and rained down upon them stones of what had been decreed.
(see commentary for verse 51)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:74) Then We turned their habitations up-side-down and We rained stones of baked clay upon them. *41
*41 These "stones of baked clay" might have been meteoric showers or volcanic eruptions that flew and rained upon them, or these might have been blown by a strong wind.

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ {15:75}
[Q15:75] Inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil lilmutawassimeen.
[Q15:75] Surely in this are signs for those who examine.
(see commentary for verse 51)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:75) There are big Signs in these events for men of understanding.

وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ مُقِيمٍ {15:76}
[Q15:76] Wa innahaa labi sabeelim muqeem.
[Q15:76] And surely it is on a road that still abides.
(see commentary for verse 51)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:76) And the smitten territory still lies on the high way. *42
*42 That is, "That smitten territory lies on the high road from Hijaz (Arabia) to Syria and Egypt". Travellers come across these Signs of destruction which are very prominent in the territory that lies to the south-east of the Dead Sea. The geographers are of the opinion that there is no other land on the surface of the Earth which looks desolate as this territory, especially its southern part.

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ {15:77}
[Q15:77] Inna fee zaalika la Aayatal lilmu'mineen.
[Q15:77] Most surely there is a sign in this for the believers.
(see commentary for verse 51)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:77) Indeed there is an admonition in it for true believers.

وَإِنْ كَانَ أَصْحَابُ الْأَيْكَةِ لَظَالِمِينَ {15:78}
[Q15:78] Wa in kaana Ashaabul Aikati lazaalimeen.
[Q15:78] And the dwellers of the thicket also were most surely unjust.

Refer to the commentary of Araf 7:85 to 93 for the people of Madian and prophet Shu-aybAykah means thicket, forest. The dwellers of the aykah were the people of prophet Shu-ayb.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:78) As the people of Al Aikah *43 were unjust,
*43 The people of Al-Aikah were the canmunity of Prophet Shu`aib and were called Midianites after the name of their capital city and their territory. As regards AI-Aikah, it was the ancient name of Tabuk and literally means a "thick forest".

فَانْتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ مُبِينٍ {15:79}
[Q15:79] Fantaqamnaa minhum wa innahumaa labi imaamim mubeeneen.
[Q15:79] So We inflicted retribution on them, and they are both, indeed, on an open road (still) pursued.
(see commentary for verse 78)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:79) We took vengeance on them. And the ruined habitations of these two Communities lie upon the open highway*44
*44 Midian lay on the route from Hijaz to Palestine and Syria.

SECTION 6
The people of the Rock
A brief account of the punishment the people of the Rock had---The Holy Prophet (Muhammad) told not to grieve for the transgressors---Prayer to continue until death which is sure to come to every one.

وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَابُ الْحِجْرِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ {15:80}
[Q15:80] Wa laqad kazzaba ashaabul Hijril mursaleen.
[Q15:80] And the dwellers of the Rock certainly rejected the messengers;

Refer to the commentary of Araf 7:73 to 79 for the people of Thamud and prophet Salih. The dwellers of hijr were the Thamud the people of Salih. They lived in houses that had been hewed out in the mountains.
Jabl Hijr is about 150 miles from Madina. The rocky tract of land known by this name lies in the north of Arabia on the highway to Syria.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:80) The people of Al Hijr *45 also treated the Messengers as impostors
*45 AI-Hijr was the capital city of the people of Thamud, and its ruins are found near the modern city of Al-'Ula' which is to the north west of Al-Madinah, and lies on the route from AI-Madinah to Tabuk. Though the caravans had to pass through the valley of Al-Hijr, the Holy Prophet had forbidden the Muslims to stay in the valley on their journey.
When Ibn Batutah reached there in the eighth century of Hijrah on his way to Makkah, he wrote: "I have seen the buildings of Thamud hewed into red mountains; the paintings look so bright as if they have been put on only recently....and rotten bones of human beings are found in them even today." (See E.N. 57 of VII.)

وَآتَيْنَاهُمْ آيَاتِنَا فَكَانُوا عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ {15:81}
[Q15:81] Wa aatainaahum Aayaatinaa fakaanoo 'anhaa mu'rideen;
[Q15:81] And We gave them Our communications, but they turned aside from them;
(see commentary for verse 80)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:81) and We sent Our Revelations and showed Our Signs to them, but they went on ignoring all these things.

وَكَانُوا يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا آمِنِينَ {15:82}
[Q15:82] Wa kaanoo yanhitoona minal jibaali buyootan aamineen.
[Q15:82] And they hewed houses in the mountains in security.
(see commentary for verse 80)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:82) They hewed their dwellings into the mountains *46 and apparently lived in full security.
*46 That is, "Their strong and secure buildings, which they had hewed into the mountains, could not protect them from the blast."

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ {15:83}
[Q15:83] Fa akhazat humus saihatu musbiheen
[Q15:83] So the rumbling overtook them in the morning;
(see commentary for verse 80)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:83) But at last a violent blast over took them with the approach of the morning,

فَمَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ {15:84}
[Q15:84] Famaaa aghnaa 'anhum maa kaanoo yaksiboon.
[Q15:84] And what they earned did not avail them.
(see commentary for verse 80)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:84) and all that they had achieved proved of no avail

وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَآتِيَةٌ ۖ فَاصْفَحِ الصَّفْحَ الْجَمِيلَ {15:85}
[Q15:85] And We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them two but in truth; and the hour is most surely coming, so turn away with kindly forgiveness.

Bil haqq, with reference to the creation of the heavens and the earth and that which is between them, means "with a purpose".
±  See also Al Imran 3:190; Muminun 23:115; Rum 30:27 and Sad 27 to know that the purpose of creation is the life of hereafter, BECAUSE IF THERE IS NO LIFE OF THE HEREAFTER THE CREATION BECOMES MEANINGLESS. To say that life of this world is an end in itself is atheism.
A vain and meaningless act is unworthy of an absolute, perfect and all-wise supreme being. After mentioning the punishment inflicted on the people of Lut and Thamud in this world the reference to the purpose of creation and the life of hereafter is a conclusion TO WARN THE ENEMIES OF THE HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHUMA SALI ALA MUHAMMAD WA ALA ALI MUHAMMAD) THAT THE PLEASURES AND COMFORTS OF THE LIFE OF THIS WORLD THEY WERE ENJOYING SHOULD BE TAKEN AS A RESPITE. A severe punishment is awaiting for them in the life of hereafter because the hour of judgement is surely to come.
SO the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) should turn away from the disbelievers with a gracious pardoning AND LEAVE THE MATTER TO ALLAH (SWT)  WHO KNOWS WHAT TO DO WITH THEM.
v  When the enemy is overpowered "the mercy unto the world" overlooks their mischief with gracious forgiveness.
There is no conflict between this verse and the verses dealing with jihad.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:85) We have not based the creation of the Earth and the Heavens and everything but truth, *47 and our judgment is sure to come. So O Muhammad, overlook . (Their misbehaviour) in a gracious manner.
*47 This was to reassure the Holy Prophet that ultimately he would come out successful because he was propagating the Truth, and the whole of the universe was based on truth. Such an assurance was urgently needed because at that tithe falsehood appeared to be triumphant over the Truth. This implies, "O Prophet, do not worry at all at the apparent "success" of falsehood for this is temporary. Likewise the difficulties, the obstacles and the troubles in the way of truth are not permanent. Take courage, and have confidence in the cause of the Truth and you will triumph over falsehood because the whole system of the miverse is akin to truth and averse to falsehood. Therefore, truth is permanent and falsehood is perishable" (Please refer to E.N.'s 25 26,35-39 of Surah Ibrahim).

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ الْخَلَّاقُ الْعَلِيمُ {15:86}
[Q15:86] Inna Rabbaka Huwal khallaaqul 'aleem.
[Q15:86] Surely your Lord is the Creator of all things, the Knowing.
[Q15:86] Sesungguhnya Tuhanmu, Dialah yang menciptakan sekalian makhluk, lagi Yang Maha Mengetahui (akan hal mereka).
(see commentary for verse 85)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:86) Indeed your Lord is the Creator of all and is All-Knowing*48 We have given you seven verses that are worthy of recitation over and over again, *49
*48 These attributes of Allah have been mentioned to reassure the Holy Prophet as if to say, "As Allah is the Creator, He has complete power over all his creatures, and no one is able to escape His punishment. Moreover, He is AllKnowing: He is fully aware that you are exerting your utmost for their reform, and He knows also their evil machinations against your efforts for reform. Therefore, you need not worry on this account, but you should wait patiently and with confidence that at the appropriate time they will be dealt with justly?"
*49 These seven verses which are recited over and over again in every prescribed salat are the verses of Al-Fatihah. Though some of the commentators are of the view that this `Al-Mathani, " refers to the seven Surahs which contain two hundred or more verses, that is, II-VII and (VIII-IX) or X. But the majority of the early commentators opine that it refers to AI-Fatihah. Imam Bukhari has cited two authentic Traditions in support of the view that it refers to Al-Fatihah.

وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ سَبْعًا مِنَ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنَ الْعَظِيمَ {15:87}
[Q15:87] Wa laqad aatainaaka sab'am minal masaanee wal Qur-aanal 'azeem.
[Q15:87] And certainly We have given you seven of the oft-repeated (verses) and the grand Qur’an.

Refer to the commentary of al Fatihah.
The seven oft-repeated verses of AL FATIHAH SUM UP THE WHOLE TEACHING OF THE GLORIOUS QUR’AN, and constitute the most precious gift to a Muslim.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:87) and We have also bestowed on you the glorious Qur'an*50
*50 The mention of the precious gift of the Glorious Qur'an has been made also to console the Holy Prophet and his followers that they should not even look at the worldly wealth of their opponents because that was nothing as compared with this precious wealth. In order to grasp the full significance of this, one should keep in view the fact that at that time the Holy Prophet and his Companions were suffering badly from poverty. The trading activities of the Holy Prophet had almost come to an end during the period in which he had been engaged in his Mission. Besides this, he had almost used up the whole wealth of Hadrat Khaijah. As regards his Companions, some of the young men had been turned out of their homes and reduced to poverty. The economic boycott had mined the business of those who were engaged in trade. There were others who were mere slaves or proteges of the Quraish and had no economic position whatever. In addition to their sad economic plight, all the Muslims, along with the Holy Prophet, were suffering persecution from the people of Makkah and its surroundings, In short, they were so much persecuted, ridiculed and insulted that no one of them was safe from physical and mental torture. On the other side, the Quraish, their opponents and persecutors, enjoyed all the good things of this world, and lived lives of happiness and luxury.. This is the background of the reassurance given to the Believers, as if to say, "Why should you feel disheartened at this? We have given you "wcalth" which surpasses all kinds of worldly riches. Therefore, your opponents should cnvy your knowledge and high morals; you need not cnvy their ill-canned wcalth and their wicked enjoyments, for when they will go before their Lord, they themselves will find that they had not brought such wcalth as carries any value there. "

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِ أَزْوَاجًا مِنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ {15:88}
[Q15:88] Laa tamuddanna 'ainaika ilaa maa matta'naa biheee azwaajam minhum wa laa tahzan 'alaihim wakhfid janaahaka lilmu'mineen.
[Q15:88] Do not strain your eyes after what We have given certain classes of them to enjoy, and do not grieve for them, and make yourself gentle to the believers.

The people are addressed through the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) not to turn their eyes towards the material blessings which allah (swt) has given to some groups of the disbelievers to enjoy in this world, AND NOT TO BE SAD for their ultimate end; AND they are advised to make themselves more accessible to the believers. It may be that some people have worldly goods which worldly men envy.
©  THE "MAN OF ALLAH (SWT)" SEEKS NEARNESS TO ALLAH (SWT) AND DESIRES HIS PLEASURE ONLY, BUT in his human love and sympathy may feel concerned about the false and callous attitude of the ignorant people.
The metaphor "lower your wing" is from a bird who lowers her wings in tender gentleness for her little ones.
ß  The Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) said:
"If any one ever considers anything better than the Qur’an, he has given (undue) importance to an insignificant thing more than that which ALLAH (SWT) has made great."
REAL HAPPINESS LIES IN SPIRITUAL AND INTELLECTUAL PURSUITS AND ACHIEVEMENTS. When such enduring bounties have been bestowed on a true believer he should not turn his eyes towards temporary sensual pleasures the disbelievers enjoy.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:88) Do not even look at the worldly wealth We have given to different people from among them nor grieve at their condition*51 Leave them alone and attend to the Believers.
*51 That is, "Do not grieve that they consider you as their enemy, though you .are their sincere well-wisher; that they regard their vices as their virtues; that they are not only themselves following but leading their followers on that way which inevitably leads to destruction: nay, they are doing their worst to oppose the reformative efforts of the one who is showing them the way of peace."

وَقُلْ إِنِّي أَنَا النَّذِيرُ الْمُبِينُ {15:89}
[Q15:89] Wa qul inneee anan nazeerul mubeen.
[Q15:89] And say: Surely I am the plain Warner.

Mubin implies both openness and clarity-freedom from ambiguity. The message of the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) was clear and unambiguous. THERE WAS NO COMPROMISE WITH EVIL.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:89) Tell (the disbelievers), "I am a plain warner only.

كَمَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَى الْمُقْتَسِمِينَ {15:90}
[Q15:90] Kamaaa anzalnaa 'alal muqtasimeen.
[Q15:90] Like as We sent down on the dividers.

These verses refer to the Jews and Christians who took out of the scriptures what suited them and ignored or rejected the rest.
Ì  See Al Baqarah 2:85 and 101.

(15:90) This warning is like the warning We sent to the schismatics,

الَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا الْقُرْآنَ عِضِينَ {15:91}
[Q15:91] Allazeena ja'alul Quraana'ideen.
[Q15:91] Those who made the Qur’an into shreds.
(see commentary for verse 90)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:91) who have caused divisions in their Qur'an" *52
*52 The schismatics were the Jews for they had split their religion into many parts and caused division in it. They believed in certain parts and rejected the other parts, and detracted some things from it and added others to it. Thus they had been divided into many sectarian groups, which were opposed to one another.
"They have cut their Qur'an (Torah) into pieces": "They believe in certain parts of it and reject other parts. " The same thing has been stated in II: 85 like this: ".... Do you then believe in one part of the Scriptures and disbelieve in the other parts ...."
" .... this warning is like the warning We sent to the schismatics (Jews)" . ' This is meant to warn the disbelievers that they should learn a lesson from the plight of the Jews who neglected the warning that was given to than by God, and persisted in their wrong ways, as if to say, "You arc beholding the degradation of the Jews. Do you like to meet with the same end by neglecting this warning?"

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْأَلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ {15:92}
[Q15:92] Fawa Rabbika lanas'a lannahum ajma'een.
[Q15:92] So, by your Lord, We would most certainly question them all,
[Q15:92] Demi Tuhanmu!
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:92) So by your Lord, We will surely take account from them

عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ {15:93}
[Q15:93] 'Ammaa kaanoo ya'maloon.
[Q15:93] As to what they did.
[Q15:93] Mengenai apa yang mereka telah lakukan.

(15:93) concering what they had been doing.

فَاصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ {15:94}
[Q15:94] Fasda' bimaa tu'maru wa a'rid anil mushrikeen.
[Q15:94] Therefore declare openly what you are bidden and turn aside from the polytheists.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:94) So, (O Prophet), proclaim publicly what you are being bidden, and never mind those who practise shirk.

إِنَّا كَفَيْنَاكَ الْمُسْتَهْزِئِينَ {15:95}
[Q15:95] Innaa kafainaakal mustahzi'een.
[Q15:95] Surely We will suffice you against the scoffers.

The pagans of Makka, who set up other gods besides ALLAH (SWT), used to mock at the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) whenever he preached "unity of ALLAH (SWT)" and asked them to abandon polytheism yet he continued his divine mission undeterred. Then they became violent.
EVEN THEIR FIERCE AND FURIOUS HOSTILITY COULD NOT STOP HIM BECAUSE ALLAH (SWT) WAS WITH HIM AND ALLAH (SWT) WAS SUFFICIENT FOR HIM AGAINST THE HOSTILE TERRORISTS.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(15:95) We suffice on your behalf to take to task

الَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ {15:96}
[Q15:96] Those who set up another god with ALLAH (SWT); so they shall soon know.

[Q15:97] And surely We know that your breast straitens at what they say;

(15:97) We know that your heart is distressed at the things they say against you.

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُنْ مِنَ السَّاجِدِينَ {15:98}
[Q15:98] Fasbbih bihamdi Rabbika wa kum minas saajideen.
[Q15:98] Therefore celebrate the praise of your Lord, and be of those who make obeisance.

(15:98) (This is the remedy:) you should glorify your Lord with His praise, and fall in prostration before Him,

وَاعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ الْيَقِينُ {15:99}
[Q15:99] Wa'bud Rabbaka hattaa yaatiyakal yaqeen.
[Q15:99] And serve your Lord until there comes to you that which is certain.

(15:99) and serve your Lord till that last hour which is sure to come. *53
*53 That is Salat and worship of your Lord are the only means which can generate in you that power of sustenance which is required to stand resolutley against the troubles and afflictions you will inevitably encounter in the propagation of the Message of the Truth and reform of humanity. This will comfort you, fill you with courage and enable you to perform that Divine Mission on which you have been sent in the face of abuse, derision and obstacles."
