SURAH AL-IMRAN (AYAH 161 to 171)

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَغُلَّ ۚ وَمَنْ يَغْلُلْ يَأْتِ بِمَا غَلَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۚ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ {3:161}
[Q3:161] Wa maa kaana li Nabiyyin ai yaghull; wa mai yaghlul yaati bimaa ghalla Yawmal Qiyaamah; summa tuwaffaa kullu nafsim maa kasabat wa hum laa yuzlamoon.
[Q3:161] And it is not attributable to a prophet that he should act unfaithfully; and he who acts unfaithfully shall bring that in respect of which he has acted unfaithfully on the day of resurrection; then shall every soul be paid back fully what it has earned, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly.

On the division of booty at Badr a garment was found missing. Some companions remarked that it might have been taken away privately by the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) himself.
THE HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHUMA SALI ALA MUHAMMAD WA ALA ALI MUHAMMAD) HAS BEEN EXALTED BY ALLAH (SWT) TO THE HIGHEST PINNACLES OF HONOUR AND GLORY, THEREFORE those who wrongly try to blacken the fair name of the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) shall be punished on the day of reckoning.
FOR VERSE 162 - He who follows the please of ALLAH (SWT) has been described in verse 2:207 of al Baqarah:
And among men is he who sells himself to seek the pleasure of ALLAH (SWT).
It was Ali who stood by the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) in the battle of Uhad to the end (see commentary of verses 121 and 122 of this surah).
Those who ran away from the battlefield had incurred the wrath of ALLAH (SWT). Verse 8:16 of Al Anfal also confirms that he who turns his back (in the battlefield) brings the wrath of ALLAH (SWT) on himself.
IT IS A WARNING TO THOSE WHO MANIPULATE to elevate and exalt the men of ordinary character (deserters) to the higher status of the thoroughly purified spiritual leaders, the holy Imams of the house of the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad)-Ahlul Bayt.

(3:161) It is not for a Prophet to defraud; *114 and whoever defrauds shall bring with him the fruits of his fraud on the Day of Resurrection, when every human being shall be paid in full what he has earned, and shall not be wronged.
*114. When the archers, whom the Prophet had posted to defend the army against any attack from the rear, saw that the spoils of the enemy were being collected, they feared that the spoils might fall in their entirety to the lot of the soldiers who were then collecting them, and that they might, therefore, be deprived of their share. It was this idea which had impelled them to leave their posts. When the Prophet returned to Madina after the battle he asked them to explain the cause of their disobedience. When he had heard their unconvincing stories he told them: 'You thought that we would act dishonestly and would not deliver you your share.' (See Alusi. Ruh al-Ma'ani, commentary on this verse - Ed.) The verse alludes to this here. The purpose is to impress upon them that the Messenger of God himself was the commander of their army and that all their affairs were in his hands alone. What made them feel that their interests were not secure even in the hands of God's Messenger? Did they think that a division of spoils under the direct supervision of the Prophet would be made in any manner other than that dictated by absolute honesty, trustworthiness and justice?

أَفَمَنِ اتَّبَعَ رِضْوَانَ اللَّهِ كَمَنْ بَاءَ بِسَخَطٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَمَأْوَاهُ جَهَنَّمُ ۚ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ {3:162}
[Q3:162] Afamanit taba'a Ridwaanal laahi kamam baaa'a bisakhatim minal laahi wa maawaahu Jahannam; wa bi'sal maseer.
[Q3:162] Is then he who follows the pleasure of ALLAH (SWT) like him who has made himself deserving of displeasure from ALLAH (SWT), and his abode is hell; and it is an evil destination.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:162) Is he who follows the good pleasure of Allah like him who is laden with Allah's wrath and whose abode is Hell? How evil that is for a resting-place!

هُمْ دَرَجَاتٌ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بَصِيرٌ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ {3:163}
[Q3:163] Hum darajaatun 'indal laah; wallaahu baseerum bimaa ya'maloon.
[Q3:163] There are (varying) grades with ALLAH (SWT), and ALLAH (SWT) sees what they do.

THERE ARE DIFFERENT RANKS WITH ALLAH (SWT) for those who follow the pleasure of ALLAH (SWT) AS WELL as for those who earn His wrath.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:163) They vary greatly in rank in the sight of Allah, and Allah sees what they do.

لَقَدْ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ بَعَثَ فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِهِ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَإِنْ كَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلُ لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ {3:164}
[Q3:164]  Laqad mannal laahu 'alal mu'mineena iz ba'asa feehim Rasoolam min anfusihim yatloo 'alaihim Aayaatihee wa yuzakkeehim wa yu'allimu humul Kitaaba wal Hikmata wa in kaanoo min qablu lafee dalaalim mubeen.
[Q3:164] Certainly ALLAH (SWT) conferred a benefit upon the believers when He raised among them a Messenger from among themselves, reciting to them His communications and purifying them, and teaching them the Book and the wisdom, although before that they were surely in manifest error.

THE HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHUMA SALI ALA MUHAMMAD WA ALA ALI MUHAMMAD) WAS A *TEACHER, *INTERPRETER AND *EXPOUNDER OF THE RELIGION OF ALLAH (SWT). Before him the people, all over the world, were steeped in evil, idolatry and slavery. It was a great favour of ALLAH (SWT) that He sent the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) to show them the right path.
µ  As has been made clear in verse 49:17 of al Hujurat those who became Muslims (submitted to ALLAH (SWT) ) should not deem it a favour to the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad).
µ  It is ALLAH (SWT) who conferred a favour on them, in as much as He has led them to the faith. Also see verses 2:129 and 151 of al Baqarah.
"To purify them" does not refer to the Ahlul Bayt, BECAUSE they have been thoroughly purified by ALLAH (SWT) Himself (Ahzab 33: 33).
°          “They make it a favour unto thee (Muhammad) that they surrendered (unto Him), Say: Deem not your Surrender a favour on me, in as much as He has led you to the Faith, if you be truthful.” (verse 49:17)
°          “Our Lord! And raise up in their midst a messenger from among them who shall recite unto them Thy revelations, and shall instruct them in the Scripture and in wisdom and shall, make them grow. Verily Thou, only Thou, art the Mighty, Wise.” (verse 2:129)
°          “Even as We have sent unto you a messenger from among you, who recites unto you Our revelations and caused you to grow, and teaches you the scripture and wisdom, and teaches you that which you knew not.” (verse 2:151)
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:164) Surely Allah conferred a great favour on the believers when He raised from among them a Messenger to recite to them His signs, and to purify them, and to teach them the Book and Wisdom. For before that they were in manifest error.

أَوَلَمَّا أَصَابَتْكُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَدْ أَصَبْتُمْ مِثْلَيْهَا قُلْتُمْ أَنَّىٰ هَٰذَا ۖ قُلْ هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ أَنْفُسِكُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ {3:165}
[Q3:165] Awa lammaaa asaabatkum museebatun qad asabtum mislaihaa qultum annaa haazaa qul huwa min 'indi anfusikum; innal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in Qadeer.
[Q3:165] What! When a misfortune befell you, and you had certainly afflicted (the unbelievers) with twice as much, you began to say: Whence is this? Say: It is from yourselves; surely ALLAH (SWT) has power over all things.
Sesungguhnya ALLAH (SwT) Maha Kuasa atas tiap-tiap sesuatu.

"What!" is a reproach? Those converts who accepted Islam with half a heart showed their dissatisfaction at the slightest reverse or disadvantage. They began to waver after the battle of Uhad on the pretext as to how that reverse came about when they were believers.
It is pointed out to them that it was due to their disobeying the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad)'s command and yielding to satanic promptings. Verse 49:14 of al Hujurat says that those who had become Muslims were not sincere believers.
“All who had joined the ranks of the Muslims were not sincere”--- verse 49:14
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:165) And how come when a calamity befell you, you began to ask: 'How has this come about?' *115 even though the enemy has suffered at your hands (in the Battle of Badr) double what you have suffered! *116 Say: This calamity has been brought about by yourselves. *117 Surely Allah is Ail-Powerful. *118
*115. The more high ranking Companions were too well aware of reality to fall prey to any misunderstandings. The ordinary believers, however, had thought that as long as God's Messenger was in their midst and as long as they enjoyed God's support and help the unbeliever, could never triumph over them. Hence, when they suffered defeat at the Battle of Uhud, their expectations were shaken and they began to wonder why things had taken the course they had. They wondered why they had been defeated even though they had fought for the sake of God's true religion with God's support, and the Messenger of God was with them on the battlefield. Furthermore, they were worried that the defeat had been at the hands of those who were out to destroy God's true religion. These verses seek to allay this sense of anxiety and rid their minds of doubt and suspicion.
*116. In the Battle of Uhud seventy Muslims were martyred. In the Battle of Badr, seventy unbelievers were killed and seventy taken as captives.
*117. The calamity that had befallen them was the outcome of their own weaknesses and mistakes. They had not remained sufficiently patient, they had acted, in certain respects, in a manner inconsistent with the dictates of piety, they had disobeyed the command that had been given them, they were lured by material wealth and they disputed and quarrelled among them-selves. After all this, was it still necessary to ask what caused the debacle?
*118. If God has the power to make them victorious He also has the power to bring about their defeat.

وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ فَبِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ {3:166}
[Q3:166] Wa maa asaabakum yawmal taqal jam'aani fabiiznil laahi wa liya'lamal mu'mineen.
[Q3:166] And what befell you on the day when the two armies met (at Ohud) was with ALLAH (SWT)'s knowledge, and that He might know the believers.

The events which took place in the battle of Uhad have been described and discussed from verse 121 of this surah onwards. THAT WHICH BEFELL THE MUSLIMS WAS BY ALLAH (SWT)'S WILL SO THAT THE BELIEVERS AND THE HYPOCRITES COULD BE IDENTIFIED OPENLY, AND THE FAITH OF THE ONE GROUP AND THE HYPOCRISY OF THE OTHER MADE CLEAR.
ALLAH (SWT) knew best that which the hypocrites concealed. When they were asked to come and fight in the way of ALLAH (SWT), they thought that it was not a fair fight (because the enemy was killing them, therefore, they took to flight).
NEARER WERE THE HYPOCRITE DESERTERS ON THAT DAY TO INFIDELITY. [a] They also assumed that had those who were slain in the battle stayed at home they would have remained alive. [b] Those who do not believe in ALLAH (SWT) are ignorant of the fact that the hour of death is certain whether they go to the field of battle or stay at home.
IT SHOWS THAT THE HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHUMA SALI ALA MUHAMMAD WA ALA ALI MUHAMMAD) HAD CARRIED OUT HIS MISSION IN THE PRESENCE OF OPEN AND HIDDEN HOSTILE FORCES OF ANTAGONISM. Please refer to the commentary of al Baqrah 2:8 to 20 to know about the hypocrites. Also refer to al Munafiqun.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:166) What befell you on the day when the two hosts met was by the leave of Allah, and in order that He might mark out those who believe.

وَلِيَعْلَمَ الَّذِينَ نَافَقُوا ۚ وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا قَاتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَوِ ادْفَعُوا ۖ قَالُوا لَوْ نَعْلَمُ قِتَالًا لَاتَّبَعْنَاكُمْ ۗ هُمْ لِلْكُفْرِ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَقْرَبُ مِنْهُمْ لِلْإِيمَانِ ۚ يَقُولُونَ بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ مَا لَيْسَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَكْتُمُونَ {3:167}
[Q3:167] Wa liya'lamal lazeena naafaqoo; wa qeela lahum ta'aalaw qaatiloo fee sabeelil laahi awid fa'oo qaaloo law na'lamu qitaalallat taba'naakum; hum lilkufri yawma'izin aqrabu minhum lil eemaan; yaqooloona bi afwaahihim maa laisa fee quloobihim; wallaahu a'lamu bimaa yaktumoon.
[Q3:167] And that He might know the hypocrites; and it was said to them: Come, fight in ALLAH (SWT)'s way, or defend yourselves. They said: If we knew fighting, we would certainly have followed you. They were on that day much nearer to unbelief than to belief. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts, and ALLAH (SWT) best knows what they conceal.
(see commentary for verse 166)

(3:167) and those who are hypocrites. And when these hypocrites were asked: 'Come and fight in the wayof Allah', or (at least) 'defend yourselves', they answered: 'If we but knew that there would be fighting, we would certainly have followed. *119 They were nearer then to infidelity than to faith. They utter from their mouths what is not in their hearts. Allah knows well what they conceal.
*119. When 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy decided to withdraw from the battlefield with his men several Muslims attempted to persuade him not to do so. Ibn Ubayy replied that he was sure that there would be no fighting that day, and he assured them that had he expected fighting to take place, he would have gone along with them.

الَّذِينَ قَالُوا لِإِخْوَانِهِمْ وَقَعَدُوا لَوْ أَطَاعُونَا مَا قُتِلُوا ۗ قُلْ فَادْرَءُوا عَنْ أَنْفُسِكُمُ الْمَوْتَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ {3:168}
[Q3:168] Allazeena qaaloo liikhwaanihim wa qa'adoo law ataa'oonaa maa qutiloo; qul fadra'oo'an anfusikumul mawta in kuntum saadiqeen.
[Q3:168] Those who said of their brethren whilst they (themselves) held back: Had they obeyed us, they would not have been killed. Say: Then avert death from yourselves if you speak the truth.
(see commentary for verse 166)

(3:168) These are the ones who stayed away, saying about their brothers: 'Had they followed us, they would not have been slain.' Say: 'If you speak the truth then avert death when it comes to you.'

وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَمْوَاتًا ۚ بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ {3:169}
[Q3:169] Wa laa tahsabannal lazeena qutiloo fee sabeelillaahi amwaata; bal ahyaaa'un 'inda Rabbihim yurzaqoon;
[Q3:169] And reckon not those who are killed in ALLAH (SWT) 's way as dead; nay, they are alive (and) are provided sustenance from their Lord;
[Q3:169] Dan jangan sekali-kali engkau menyangka orang-orang yang terbunuh (yang gugur Syahid) pada jalan ALLAH (SwT) itu mati, (mereka tidak mati) bahkan mereka adalah hidup (secara istimewa) di sisi Tuhan mereka dengan mendapat rezeki;

THOSE SLAIN IN THE WAY OF ALLAH (SWT) ARE NOT DEAD. THEY ARE ALIVE, GETTING SUSTENANCE FROM THEIR LORD. The unending life or continuous existence of the martyrs has been fully discussed in the commentary of al Baqarah 2:154 and 155.
DEATH IS NOT THE DESTRUCTION OF THE RUH (SPIRIT).
It applies to all human beings, but as said in verse 163 of this surah "of diverse ranks they shall be with ALLAH (SWT)", THEREFORE, THE MARTYRS WHO ARE NEAREST TO HIM AND OCCUPY HIGHEST POSITIONS ARE IN DIRECT COMMUNION WITH THEIR LORD. Their active consciousness perceives that which is happening in this world even after their departure from here. **THEY CAN REACH US AND WE CAN HAVE ACCESS TO THEM.
**Through the grace of ALLAH (SWT), on account of their direct relationship with Him, they can carry into effect that which they desire by His permission. As mentioned in al Baqarah 2:154 and 155, they are the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) and his Ahlul Bayt.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:169) Think not of those slain in the way of Allah as dead. *120 Indeed they are living, and with their Lord they have their sustenance,
*120. For an explanation see Surah 2. n. 155 above.

فَرِحِينَ بِمَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ وَيَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِالَّذِينَ لَمْ يَلْحَقُوا بِهِمْ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ أَلَّا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ {3:170}
[Q3:170] Fariheena bimaaa aataa humul laahu min fadlihee wa yastabshiroona billazeena lam yalhaqoo bihim min fadlihee wa yastabshiroona billazeena lam yalhaqoo bihim min khalfihim allaa khawfun 'alaihim wa laa hum yahzanoon.
[Q3:170] Rejoicing in what ALLAH (SWT) has given them out of His grace and they rejoice for the sake of those who, (being left) behind them, have not yet joined them, that they shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve.

(NOTES FOR VERSE 169 TO 171)
So far as personal immortality is concerned the case of martyrs and other holy men is not distinct from the personal survival after death, for all--the only thing is claimed about them is that they are alive in a more real sense than the rest of mankind and are in a more real and nobler sense provided with sustenance, for their maintenance.
They are also gifted with a waking consciousness and know what goes on in the world behind them. Anyone knows anything of Spiritualism, or even of Phychical research if he is not over-sceptical, knows that there is simply overflowing evidence of man’s survival after death---in some form of which we have no conception. [The greatest scientists, Sir Oliver Lodge and others have become fully convinced of it and have advocated it in many of their writings. The literature on the subject is so expressive that one cannot fail to be impressed. Those who withhold their belief are either those who do not care to enquire or those who do not care to enquire or those who prefer to wait hoping that some day some explanation may be found which may prove adequate to account for the facts. ]
This would suffice to show at least that far from being a mere dogma or superstitious belief, it is a fact which in the present state of knowledge has the greatest weight of authority and evidence in its favour. The souls of the departed ones somehow exist, and can communicate and be communicated with, by us and can establish their identity beyond all reasonable doubt.

(3:170) rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them out of His bounty, *121 jubilant that neither fear nor grief shall come upon the believers left behind in the world who have not yet joined them.
*121. There is a Tradition from the Prophet that he who leaves the world after having lived righteously is greeted with a life so felicitous that he never wishes to return to the world. The only exception to this are martyrs who wish to be sent back to the world so that they may once again attain martyrdom and thereby enjoy that unique joy, bliss and ecstasy which one experiences at the time of laying down one's life for God. (Ahmad b. Hanbal, Musnad, vol. Ill, 103, 126, 153, 173, 251, 276, 278, 284, 289; Bukhari, 'Tafsir al-Qur'an', 6 and 21: Muslim, 'Al-Imarah', 108, 109. 121 - Ed.)

[Q3:171] Yastabshiroona bini'matim minal laahi wa fad linw wa annal laaha laa yudee'u ajral mu'mineen.
