SURAH AL-IMRAN (AYAH 151 to 160)

سَنُلْقِي فِي قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الرُّعْبَ بِمَا أَشْرَكُوا بِاللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِ سُلْطَانًا ۖ وَمَأْوَاهُمُ النَّارُ ۚ وَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى الظَّالِمِينَ{3:151}
[Q3:151] Sanulqee fee quloobil lazeena kafarur ru'ba bimaaa ashrakoo billaahi maa lam yunazzil bihee sultaana(nw) wa maawaahumun Naar; wa bi'sa maswaz zaalimeen.
[Q3:151] We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they set up with ALLAH (SWT) that for which He has sent down no authority, and their abode is the fire, and evil is the abode of the unjust.

The events of the battle of Uhad described in the commentary of verses 121 and 122 should be carefully studied to understand the meaning of the "terror" ALLAH (SWT) had cast into the hearts of the disbelievers. It was through Ali (yadullah-the hand of ALLAH (SWT)) that the Almighty turned the Makkans, after their show of a victory, into a terror-stricken bunch of rats, hastily fleeing to Hamra ul Asad-a curious sight indeed of a "victorious" army in humiliating retreat instead of advancing to Madina to lay it in ruins.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:151) We will cast terror into the hearts of those who have denied the Truth since they have associated others with Allah in His divinity - something for which He has sent down no sanction. The Fire is their abode; how bad the resting place of the wrong-doers will be!

وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُمْ بِإِذْنِهِ ۖ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ وَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ وَعَصَيْتُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا أَرَاكُمْ مَا تُحِبُّونَ ۚ مِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا وَمِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ ۚ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ ۖ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا عَنْكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ {3:152}
[Q3:152] Wa laqad sadaqakumul laahu wa'dahooo iz tahussoo nahum bi iznihee hattaaa izaa fashiltim wa tanaaza'tum fil amri wa 'asaitum mim ba'di maaa araakum maa tuhibboon; minkum mai yureedud dunyaa wa minkum mai yureedul Aakhirah; summa sarafakum 'anhum sarafakum 'anhum liyabtaliyakum wa laqad 'afaa 'ankum; wallaahu zoo fadlin 'alal mu'mineen.
[Q3:152] And certainly ALLAH (SWT) made good to you His promise when you slew them by His permission, until when you became weak-hearted and disputed about the affair and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you loved; of you were some who desired this world and of you were some who desired the hereafter; then He turned you away from them that He might try you; and He has certainly pardoned you, and ALLAH (SWT) is Gracious to the believers.

Refer to the commentary of verses 121 and 122 of this surah to know how Ali and Hamza were extirpating the enemy BUT, when the victory was in sight, the Muslims fell to plundering the enemy's camp, by casting the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad)'s strict injunction to the winds. THIS "WORLDLINESS" PUT THEM IN AN AWKWARD POSITION. Fearing total destruction they ran away to save their lives, and failed in the test ALLAH (SWT) planned for them. There were they who desired this world. There were some who desired the hereafter, SO, ON ACCOUNT of their steadfastness and readiness to die in the cause of ALLAH (SWT), He forgave all of them and through Ali, as asadullahcreated terror in the hearts of the enemy soldiers who made a hasty retreat in spite of having an upper hand.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:152) Allah surely fulfilled His promise (of succour) when you were slaying them by His leave until the moment when you flagged and quarrelled among yourselves about the matter, and acted against the order of (the Prophet). Soon He showed you what you had intensely desired - for some among you sought this world and some of you sought the Next. Thereupon, in order to put you to a test He turned you away from your foes. Still He pardoned you after that *109 for Allah is Bounteous to those who believe.
*109. The failure of the Muslims was of such a serious nature that had God not pardoned them they might have been obliterated there and then. It was out of God's grace, support and patronage that after the Muslims had been overpowered by the enemy the latter were seized with perplexity and confusion, and withdrew.

إِذْ تُصْعِدُونَ وَلَا تَلْوُونَ عَلَىٰ أَحَدٍ وَالرَّسُولُ يَدْعُوكُمْ فِي أُخْرَاكُمْ فَأَثَابَكُمْ غَمًّا بِغَمٍّ لِكَيْلَا تَحْزَنُوا عَلَىٰ مَا فَاتَكُمْ وَلَا مَا أَصَابَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ {3:153}
[Q3:153] Iz tus'idoona wa laa talwoona 'alaaa ahadinw war Rasoolu yad'ookum feee ukhraakum fa asaabakum ghammam bighammil likailaa tahzanoo 'alaa maa faatakum wa laa maaa asaabakum; wallaahu khabeerum bimaa ta'maloon.
[Q3:153] When you ran off precipitately and did not wait for any one, and the Messenger was calling you from your rear, so He gave you another sorrow instead of (your) sorrow, so that you might not grieve at what had escaped you, nor (at) what befell you; and ALLAH (SWT) is aware of what you do.

The names of those who ran off and did not turn back to look, though the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) was calling them from the rear, have been given in Tarikh Tabari, Tarikh Khamis by Husayn Dayarbakri, Tarikh Kamil by Ibn Athir, Izalatul Khifa by Shah Waliullah, and Al-Faruq by Shibli. Please refer to the commentary of verses 121 and 122 of this surah.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:153) Recall when you were fleeing without casting even a side glance at anyone, and the Messenger was calling out to you from the rear. *110 Then Allah requited you by inflicting grief after grief upon you *111 so as to instruct you neither to grieve for the losses you might suffer nor for the afflictions that might befall you. Allah knows all that you do.
*110. When subjected to a sudden two-pronged attack the Muslims scattered; some fled to Madina while others climbed Mount Uhud. DESPITE THIS, THE PROPHET (PEACE BE ON HIM) DID NOT MOVE FROM HIS POSITION. The enemy surrounded him on all sides and only a small party of ten to twelve followers was left with him. Even at that critical moment his feet remained firm and he continued to summon his fleeing followers towards himself. (See Waqidi, Maghazi, vol. 1, pp. 237, 240 and 241 - Ed.)
*111. The 'grief referred to in this verse had many causes: (i) by the setback the Muslims suffered on the battlefield and by the rumour that the Prophet (peace be on him) had been martyred; (ii) by the fact that a large number of believers had been killed and wounded; and (iii) by the fact that nothing was known about what was happening to the Muslim families left behind in Madina. For it was possible that the enemy was greater in numbers than the total population of Madina, and that it might break through the defences of the battered.

ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ الْغَمِّ أَمَنَةً نُعَاسًا يَغْشَىٰ طَائِفَةً مِنْكُمْ ۖ وَطَائِفَةٌ قَدْ أَهَمَّتْهُمْ أَنْفُسُهُمْ يَظُنُّونَ بِاللَّهِ غَيْرَ الْحَقِّ ظَنَّ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ۖ يَقُولُونَ هَلْ لَنَا مِنَ الْأَمْرِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ۗ قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَمْرَ كُلَّهُ لِلَّهِ ۗ يُخْفُونَ فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ مَا لَا يُبْدُونَ لَكَ ۖ يَقُولُونَ لَوْ كَانَ لَنَا مِنَ الْأَمْرِ شَيْءٌ مَا قُتِلْنَا هَاهُنَا ۗ قُلْ لَوْ كُنْتُمْ فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ لَبَرَزَ الَّذِينَ كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَتْلُ إِلَىٰ مَضَاجِعِهِمْ ۖ وَلِيَبْتَلِيَ اللَّهُ مَا فِي صُدُورِكُمْ وَلِيُمَحِّصَ مَا فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ {3:154}
[Q3:154] Summa anzala 'alaikum mim ba'dil ghammi amanatan nu'aasai yaghshaa taaa' ifatam minkum wa taaa'ifatun qad ahammathum anfusuhum yazunnoona billaahi ghairal haqqi zannal jaahiliyyati yaqooloona hal lanaa minal amri min shai'; qul innal amra kullahoo lillaah; yukhfoona fee anfusihim maa laa yubdoona laka yaqooloona law kaana lanaa minal amri shai'ummaa qutilnaa haahunaa; qul law kuntum fee buyootikum labarazal lazeena kutiba 'alaihimul qatlu ilaa madaaji'ihim wa liyabtaliyal laahu maa fee sudoorikum wa liyumah hisa maa fee quloobikum; wallaahu 'aleemum bizaatis sudoor.
[Q3:154] Then after sorrow He sent down security upon you, a calm coming upon a party of you, and (there was) another party whom their own souls had rendered anxious; they entertained about ALLAH (SWT)  thoughts of ignorance quite unjustly, saying: We have no hand in the affair. Say: Surely the affair is wholly (in the hands) of ALLAH (SWT). They conceal within their souls what they would not reveal to you. They say: Had we any hand in the affair, we would not have been slain here. Say: Had you remained in your houses, those for whom slaughter was ordained would certainly have gone forth to the places where they would be slain, and that ALLAH (SWT) might test what was in your breasts and that He might purge what was in your hearts; and ALLAH (SWT) knows what is in the breasts.

THOSE WHO HAD FOUGHT HARD TO CREATE PANIC IN THE ENEMY'S CAMP HAD AN AGREEABLE AND REFRESHING SLEEP, BECAUSE THEIR FAITH IN ALLAH (SWT) AND HIS PROPHET WAS CERTAIN AND THEY KNEW WHAT WOULD ULTIMATELY HAPPEN. It was a divine blessing the true faithfuls enjoyed on that day as a recompense for their selfless and devotional service in the cause of ALLAH (SWT).
THERE WAS ANOTHER GROUP which questioned and doubted the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad)'s promise of divine interposition. They harboured inwardly disapproval and unbelief, and spoke into their (like-minded) comrades' ears about the sure defeat against a formidable enemy; AND ALSO grumbled regarding their advice to remain in Madina instead of coming to Uhad where their friends and relatives had been killed.
DISBELIEF IN ALLAH (SWT) AND HIS PROPHET, in the end, incited them to abandon the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) in the time of trouble. Even if they stayed at home, those of them, who were destined to die, would have gone to their place of death.
ALLAH (SWT) has made known that which was in their hearts (hypocrisy) to the people who will come in this world till the day of resurrection.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:154) Then, after inflict-ing this grief, He sent down an inner peace upon you - a sleep which overtook some of you. *112 Those who were concerned merely about themselves, entertaining false notions about Allah - the notions of the Age of Ignorance - asked: 'Have we any say in the matter?' Tell them: 'Truly, all power of decision rests solely with Allah.' Indeed, they conceal in their hearts what they would not reveal to you, saying: 'If we had any power of decision, we would not have been slain here.' Say: 'Even if you had been in your houses, those for whom slaying had been appointed would have gone forth to the places where they were to be slain.' And all this happened so that Allah might test your secret thoughts and purge your hearts of all impurities. Allah knows well what is in the breasts of men.
*112. A strange phenomenon was then experienced by certain Muslim soldiers. Abu Talhah, who took part in the battle, states that the Muslims were seized by such drowsiness that their swords were slipping from their hands. (For several Traditions stating this incident, including one related by Abu Talhah, see Waqidi, Maghazi, vol. 1, pp. 295-6 - Ed.)

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا مِنْكُمْ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ إِنَّمَا اسْتَزَلَّهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ بِبَعْضِ مَا كَسَبُوا ۖ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ حَلِيمٌ {3:155}
[Q3:155] Innal lazeena tawallaw minkum yawmal taqal jam'aani innamas tazallahumush Shaitaanu biba'di maa kasaboo wa laqad 'afal laahu 'anhum; innnal laaha Ghafoorum Haleem.
[Q3:155] (As for) those of you who turned back on the day when the two armies met, only the Shaitan sought to cause them to make a slip on account of some deeds they had done, and certainly ALLAH (SWT) has pardoned them; surely ALLAH (SWT) is Forgiving, Forbearing.

BECAUSE OF THEIR LONG ASSOCIATION WITH IDOLATRY, THE DESERTERS, who either [1] had embraced Islam under unavoidable circumstances or [2] with ulterior motives, fell an easy prey to the satanic promptings.
AS ALLAH (SWT) IS OFT-FORGIVING AND FORBEARING, HE PARDONS THOSE WHO REPENT AND ASK FORGIVENESS, BUT IT SHOULD BE NOTED that such pardoned sinners **cannot and should not be chosen as the leaders of the faithfuls. Moreover, about those who avoid fighting against an aggressor, the Qur’an says in verses 8:15 and 16 of Anfal:
When you meet unbelievers on the field of battle, do not turn backs to them.
FOR ANY ONE WHO TURNS HIS BACK ON THAT DAY, except to manoeuvre or rally to his side, will bring the wrath of ALLAH (SWT) on himself, and have hell as abode-an evil destination.
Ø  As per verse 9:11 of al Tawbah Islam means "selling of self" to ALLAH (SWT). Once a thing is sold it must be handed over to the purchaser. If one does not do so, it means, one is deceiving ALLAH (SWT).
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:155) Surely those of them who turned their backs on the day when the two armies met (at Uhud) did so because Satan made them slip because of some of their lapses. But Allah has pardoned them; He is All-Forgiving, All-Forbearing.

SECTION 17
The faithful identified from the Hypocrites at the Battle of Ohod
     Causes of the misfortune---The Hypocrites identified from the faithful---The martyrs.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَقَالُوا لِإِخْوَانِهِمْ إِذَا ضَرَبُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ أَوْ كَانُوا غُزًّى لَوْ كَانُوا عِنْدَنَا مَا مَاتُوا وَمَا قُتِلُوا لِيَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ حَسْرَةً فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ {3:156}
[Q3:156]  Yaaa ayyuhul lazeena aamanoo laa takoonoo kallazeena kafaroo wa qaaloo li ikhwaanihim izaa daraboo fil ardi aw kaanoo ghuzzal law kaanoo 'indanaa maa maatoo wa maa qutiloo liyaj'alal laahu zaalika hasratan fee quloobihim; qallaahu yuhyee wa yumeet; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona Baseer.
[Q3:156] O’ you who believe! be not like those who disbelieve and say of their brethren when they travel in the earth or engage in fighting: Had they been with us, they would not have died and they would not have been slain; so ALLAH (SWT) makes this to be an intense regret in their hearts; and ALLAH (SWT) gives life and causes death and ALLAH (SWT) sees what you do.

"Their brethren" means the Muslim relatives and friends of the infidels and the hypocrites who had to journey in the cause of Islam and face hardship or fight the enemies of Islam and die in the battlefield.
The infidels ridiculed the deserters when they reached Madina for having lost their friends and relatives in the battle of Uhad and assured them that if they had been with them (the infidels) they would not have suffered the misfortune.
Ü  THE IGNORANT INFIDELS AND "THEIR BRETHREN" DID NOT KNOW THAT ALLAH (SWT) IS THE GIVER OF LIFE AND DEATH AND THAT ULTIMATELY THE INFIDELS THEMSELVES HAD TO REGRET FOR NOT BECOMING MUSLIMS, BECAUSE FINALLY ISLAM WAS TO EMERGE VICTORIOUS.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:156) Believers, do not behave like those who disbelieved and say to their brothers (who meet some mishap) in the course of their journey for fighting: 'Had they remained with us, they would not have died nor been slain.' Allah makes such thoughts the cause of deep regrets in their hearts. *113 For in truth it is Allah alone who grants life and deals death. Allah sees all that you do.
*113. Such ideas had no solid ground. God's decree regarding the time of one's death cannot be deferred. Those who lack faith in God and think that everything is dependent on their own scheming and effort rather than on the overpowering Will of God become victims of perpetual remorse, since they never cease to reflect how a slightly different circumstance or slightly altered strategy could have led to an altogether different and wholesome result.

وَلَئِنْ قُتِلْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَوْ مُتُّمْ لَمَغْفِرَةٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ {3:157}
[Q3:157] And if you are slain in the way of ALLAH (SWT) or you die, certainly forgiveness from ALLAH (SWT) and mercy is better than what they amass.
[Q3:157] Demi sesungguhnya!

IF CAMPAIGNING IN THE CAUSE OF ALLAH (SWT) BRINGS ABOUT DEATH, IT OBTAINS HIS MERCY AND FORGIVENESS which is immensely better than what the others amass of this world and its comforts.
õ  The teachings of the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad), within a few years, had produced a group of faithfuls who were always ready to sacrifice their lives and possessions in the path of ALLAH (SWT) to earn His mercy and blessings.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:157) And were you to be slain or to die in the way of Allah, then surely Allah's forgiveness and mercy are better than all the goods they amass.

وَلَئِنْ مُتُّمْ أَوْ قُتِلْتُمْ لَإِلَى اللَّهِ تُحْشَرُونَ {3:158}
[Q3:158] And if indeed you die or you are slain, certainly to ALLAH (SWT) shall you be gathered together.
[Q3:158] Demi sesungguhnya!
(see commentary for verse 157)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:158) And were you to die or be slain, it is to Allah that you will all be mustered.

فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ لِنْتَ لَهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ كُنْتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لَانْفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ ۖ فَاعْفُ عَنْهُمْ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ ۖ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ {3:159}
[Q3:159] Fabimaa rahmatim minal laahi linta lahum wa law kunta fazzan ghaleezal qalbi lanfaddoo min hawlika fafu 'anhum wastaghfir lahum wa shaawirhum fil amri fa izaa 'azamta fatawakkal 'alal laah; innallaaha yuhibbul mutawak kileen.
[Q3:159] Thus it is due to mercy from ALLAH (SWT) that you deal with them gently, and had you been rough, hard hearted, they would certainly have dispersed from around you; pardon them therefore and ask pardon for them, and take counsel with them in the affair; so when you have decided, then place your trust in ALLAH (SWT); surely ALLAH (SWT) loves those who trust.

THE DESERTERS WHO HAD CAUSED A DISASTER AT UHAD DESERVED TO BE PUNISHED BUT the leniency shown to them did not wipe out their evil deed of desertion. IF THE HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHUMA SALI ALA MUHAMMAD WA ALA ALI MUHAMMAD) HAD BEEN STERN AND HARD OF HEART THEY WOULD SURELY HAVE BROKEN AWAY FROM HIM. SO HE WAS ASKED TO PARDON THEM in order to prevent them from making mischief and let the divine mission of guidance and salvation progress unhampered.
AS AN INDIVIDUAL THE HOLY PROPHET (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) was always [1] Inclined to mildness. [2] He never first withdrew his hand out of another man's palm. [3] He never struck any one in his life. [4] He was the sweetest and most agreeable in conversation. [5] Those who saw him were suddenly filled with reverence; [6] those who came near him loved him. [7]. He was generous and considerate even to his enemies, both open and hidden.
He was sent by ALLAH (SWT) as the "mercy unto the worlds". His kind and generous attitude towards his erring companions does not mean that their actual low station in the spiritual realm can be raised to the level of the true faithfuls, BECAUSE they remain in the category of those described in verse 8:16 of al Anfal, PARTICULARLY when time and again they showed the same tendency of defection and renunciation demonstrated at Uhad.
v  The Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) received the book and wisdom directly from ALLAH (SWT). He was the city of knowledge (and Ali its gate). He needed no advice from any body.
"Take their counsel in the affairs" has been mentioned in this verse to educate the companions to reflect and use their intelligence, to understand the issues which confronted them in their lives so that by consulting each other they might arrive at a rational conclusion and follow the reasonable advice. WHATEVER be the counsel of the companions BUT the Holy Prophet (ALLAHuma sali ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad) [1] has been asked to put his trust in ALLAH (SWT) AND [2] act according to his own judgement.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
(3:159) It was thanks to Allah's mercy that you were gentle to them. Had you been rough, hard-hearted, they would surely have scattered away from you. So pardon them, and pray for their forgiveness, and take counsel from them in matters of importance. And when you are resolved on a course of action place your trust in Allah; surely Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him).

إِنْ يَنْصُرْكُمُ اللَّهُ فَلَا غَالِبَ لَكُمْ ۖ وَإِنْ يَخْذُلْكُمْ فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَنْصُرُكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ ۗ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ {3:160}
[Q3:160] Iny-yansurkumul laahu falaa ghaaliba lakum wa iny-yakhzulkum faman zal lazee yansurukum mim ba'dih; wa 'alal laahi falyatawakkalil mu'minoon.
[Q3:160] If ALLAH (SWT) assists you, then there is none that can overcome you, and if He forsakes you, who is there then that can assist you after Him? And on ALLAH (SWT) should the believers rely.

THE BELIEVERS SHOULD RELY ON ALLAH (SWT). IF He helps them none will overcome them, AND IF He forsakes them none can help them.

(3:160) If Allah helps you none shall prevail over you; if He forsakes you then who can help you? It is in Allah that the believers should put their trust.
